I'm going to be applying for 2nd year transfer for fall 2007. I currently attend Mary Washington University and I'm in-state. I'm taking 18 credits. I'm Transfering in order to study Chinese(UVA is the only place in-state with a decent program). Say I get a reasonably decent GPA first semester(3.5), Do I have good odds? HS stats:GPA(w) 4.01 SAT M 720 v780 w760. Also, I've heard that attending the transfer student meeting at UVA really helps. Is that true? Thanks.

Shoot for a GPA above a 3.5. A 3.5 doesn't mean you've got no shot, but the competition is tough. I never took the SATs, so I have no idea what those numbers mean, but since you'll be a second-year, the admissions committee is going to weigh your high-school record heavily...your GPA is high, and if you can approach that in your first year as an undergrad you should have no problem getting in. However, I'm a student, not an admissions counselor. Before I transferred, I made an appointment to meet with Dean Greg Roberts (transfer dean), and then mentioned that in my essays. All part of the game, so it's definitely worth the drive out here to meet some officials and express your interest in UVA.

I am out-of-state and didn't attend the transfer meeting (I wish I'd known there was one), and I'm here. No worries.

How did you go about meeting the transfer dean? I was always nervous about coming off as trying to lobby the admissions departement, so I never did anything personal like that when I applied last year, when I didn't get in. I guess I should try it if it will help. How did you go about mentioning it in your essays?

Just email the admissions dept. or Dean Roberts directly. I would think that this is probably one of their slowest times of the year, as the application deadline for spring transfers is a month or so away.

Email me privately if you'd like, and I can tell you more about what I did specifically.
