I'd really appreciate if anyone who was accepted as a transfer to post their stats! Applying regular admission it's pretty clear what you need to be competitive, but I'm having some more trouble digging up information for the transfer application. The main site says the average accepted GPA is a 3.5, but that number doesn't really help me out cause you have the hard schools that deflate GPA like William and Mary or something versus others. Then there is NVCC's 3.5 guaranteed admission, which is another factor.

If it helps I currently attend Virginia Tech, so if anyone actually use to go here or knows anybody who was able to transfer from here specifically, that would be REALLY helpful! Currently I am holding onto a 4.0 as a freshman here, but I could drop to a 3.9 at the minimum if I mess up on finals! I know a 3.9-4.0 is pretty good, but I'm afraid UVA might not be impressed because this is just after a semester. No I do not plan on staying on here for 2 whole years first as UVA as always been my dream school. Just want to know what kind of a shot I have. Of course I am aware everything is holistic and that it's not all about GPA, but let's admit that it's pretty important!

There are no stats for that I know but does anyone have opinion about OOS transfer such as myself with AA drgree from OOS Community college, 3.5 GPA ec’s and pt job. First gen college student and hispanic heritage. 1920 SAT two years ago. Anyone have opinion?

I transferred to UVA after a year at Tech. You should be fine with a high GPA like that. Just make sure to spend some time on your essays and get involved with some stuff at Tech.

@historyman: It’s close, but I think you’re going to have to raise that GPA. I’m a first-gen as well, but it doesn’t really help too much. Being Hispanic will help, but a 3.5 OOS is still too low. Getting in OOS you have to be the cream of the crop! The SAT is on the low side, but good enough. Just raise those grades!

@ymon: Awesome! May I ask what your GPA specifically was?

@EWLW: After 2 years with guaranteed admission agreement or without it?

My GPA was 3.92 after the first semester. I think it ended up as 3.81 after two semesters (although UVA doesn’t see your second semester grades until after you’re accepted).

I find it very cool how you are defending VT shoebox10, seeing as you are UVA alumni and our schools are supposed to hate each other haha. In your opinion, what do you think one would need in order to transfer?

Our schools shouldn’t “hate” each other. Sure, there’s the whole sports’ rivalry, but both are very well respected schools. I work with a handful of VT grads and they’re really, really good at what they do. And frankly, most UVa students don’t “hate” VT, although I can’t always say the same about VT not hating on UVa. After college it all seems to go away anyways. Some people on here tend to portray it as a joke-school and it’s really not and I hope more people recognize that.

You need some strong stats and great essays, as well as be able to demonstrate why you want to transfer, why UVa would be a good fit, and if you’d do well transferring.

It’s nobody’s problem you’re reflecting your own insecurities about Virginia Tech since no one called it a “joke” school on this thread. I was just sharing my own experiences as a transfer student myself (from the College of W&M), where my friends had low GPAs and my VA Tech transfer friends had ridiculously high GPAs. As you have said, they are sports rivals and even though they are both respectable schools, they are not academic rivals.

You imply that when you say W&M kids get in with lower GPAs and VT kids need higher GPAs. I can tell you my VT GPA was not as high as you seem to make it out to be. Also, it’s funny how I always get asked why on earth I would transfer from VT to UVA…

Maybe it’s time you realize all three of VA’s top schools really are top schools…

Hey everyone…I am just trying to figure out my chances of being accepted to UVA for next year–fall, 2011 (application deadline March 1, 2011).

I am a California resident and currently a sophomore attending Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, so I would be transferring as a junior. I am a communications major and english minor (switched from business after 1st semester freshman year), and have a 3.8 cumulative GPA. I ran (division 1) cross country and track and field my freshman year, yet had to stop running due to a re-ocurring/major hip injury & surgery. I am currently a “student athlete mentor,” which involves teaching a class (involving study skills, ethics, etc), for the freshman athletes, as well as helping and coordinating various charity events. I consider myself a good writer, so I plan on being able to write a pretty strong essay for the application. Thanks for the help, time, and input!
