Because I won't have 30 units until after this semester, I will not hear whether I am admitted for Spring 2014 until January. I was told it could even be AFTER classes start. I would love to hear from other students who have been through this in the past. When did they hear? How hard was it to get "decent" classes? How hard was it to get housing and move in on time? Would they advise to forego late admission in the spring and apply for the fall instead? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey I just transferred to UT this fall and I was in the same situation as you. I didn’t get to hear back until June 19th and by then I had to be in the last orientation session (which meant I was the last group to get to register). During orientation they told us to just sign up for random classes as almost everything will be taken already (which happened to be the case). All my classes were just placeholders (you have to have at least 12 hours to get the full amount of financial aid) and this was the case for everybody else. So yeah, I doubt you will have many options when it comes to classes. Registration starts the first week of November I believe.

However don’t be too discouraged. You can always add yourself to waitlists and you can move up on these waitlists once the date passes for students to pay their tuition (which happened a lot actually, I was able to get into two classes with this). Furthermore student’s change their classes a lot during the add/drop period. I managed to get 15 hours of two RTF courses, two advertising courses, and even a CS 302 that was completely waitlisted at the time I added myself to the waitlist. All my classes start at 11am so I didn’t get shafted afterall. The only thing I really don’t like is the fact that I have a couple of gaps in my schedule but there really isn’t much I could do about that since that just happened to be when the class times were. Also I was a UGS major and I still managed to get very nice classes (although I had to go through a lot to get into one of my RTF courses but it was all worth it in the end since the dean let me into the RTF program without having to internally transfer).

I started looking for housing way before so it wasn’t really a big deal for me. Just don’t expect to get on-campus housing. I live at Eden House which is very close to campus (only about a 10-15 minute walk to the communications buildings) but I applied back in late February.

Can’t really say much for going into spring though. I expect it might be a bit more difficult though since most people’s leases all for the whole school year and everybody is more careful with tuition payments the second semester.
