I already applied to USC, UCLA, UCSD, UC Berkeley, Occidental, and Pitzer.
I was wondering what my chances are? I am already accepted to UCSD, I got the notification on Friday but I’m definitely worried about the others. UCSD is a great school but it wasn’t my first choice.
I had family struggles dealing with problems my mother was facing with depression and workplace harassment. My family doesn’t speak English well so I was in the crossfires with everything. I mentioned this in my applications and I know that isn’t always excusable but it really was the only reason. I got 2 C’s out of a majority of A’s and a couple of B’s which really screw balled me.
My high school GPA was absolutely horrendous but I would like to believe I made up for all of that here in CC.
My major is communications, I’m pretty much expecting a no from UCLA and the worst from all the rest.
GPA: 3.33
-Co-founded a podcast and have run it for more than a year now. Run it on multiple social media platforms and have thousands of views on YouTube.
-Work as an English tutor and my school.
-Worked as a barista for a year.
-All pre requisites complete.
-Will complete honors program by the end of spring.
-Lived in California all my life if that helps, hahaha.
Thank you for all of your help!
I’m going to have to go with no for UCLA; while on their website they have academic criteria of 3.2 or higher, 3.3 is still relatively low and isn’t really competitive (especially since most applying will likely have 3.5+ or higher with exceptional secondary records to boot). As for UC Berkeley and USC, the average GPA of the admitted transfer class in 2014-2015 (the most recent data I could find for UC Berkeley) was a 3.76 on a 4.0 scale, although the majority of the students accepted came from community colleges as well – so, “maybe,” but I’m leaning more on no. I’d say “maybe/likely,” for Occidental, mainly because they seem less selective, more transfer-friendly (although they only accept 50 each year), and offer interviews (which are optional, but you should definitely seize that opportunity). I understand UCSD is not your top choice and you managed to somewhat compensate for your poor secondary school record in college, but for some of the schools, your academics and ECs don’t exactly offer you the best chance at getting accepted. I’m not saying you won’t and can’t get in, but for top-tier universities and colleges like UCLA, I hope you can compensate what you lack in your academic record and ECs with excellent recommendation letters and essays, too.
Thanks for a real and honest response. Fully expecting the no today. Thanks!
