Transfer student question.

Greetings, everyone!

I'll be transferring into Stony Brook in the fall of 2010 after obtaining an Associate's degree in paleontology from Mesalands Community College. As I understand it, the deadline for applications is March 1st: halfway through my final semester at MCC. My question is as follows: "Will I be able to transfer the credits I earn here in the Spring 2010 semester?"

Also, how long will I have to wait for a response after I've submitted my application?

Any assistance would be very much appreciated!

Yes, you will. We’ll need an updated transcript once your classes are finished.

We won’t start looking at Fall 2010 transfer applications until probably mid- to late-February; we’ll probably start sending out decisions by mid-March.

Chris

Many thanks for your response!

So when should I send in my transfer application? (My current semester ends on December 12th.)

January’s fine.

Chris

hey i have a question about transferring to stony brook as a freshman transfer applicant. currently i am a freshman at fordham university for the fall of 200 semester. i am majoring in natural science and i know stony brook is the place for this field of major. When i applied in high school i was put on the waitlist due to the fact i applied to late and then eventually i was denied. so i planned to transfer to stony brook for the spring semester of 2010. The admissions office said they would look at my high school grades and scores and then see if i reach their standards and i have to have a 3.0 gpa after my first college smeseter a fordham. i believe i may have around a 2.8 or 2.9 gpa after my first semester at fordham. what do u guys think will be my chances of being accepted into stony brook for the spring semester of 2010 as a freshman transfer applicant?

From what you’re saying, your chances would be virtually zero, unfortunately. 24 credits and a 3.0 is going to be the magic number for transfer students, which means your best bet would be Fall 2010.

Chris

Yea but I wanna transfer after the first semester. Under the admissions rules, if you have under 24 credits you need to show your high school transcript and sat scores and they’ll base their decision off of those sources. Im not looking to obtain the 24 credits and want to get into SBU by the spring of 2010.

Right, but I’m telling you that 24 credits has become something of a practical minimum – especially if you weren’t admissible as a freshman, because your GPA and SATs haven’t gone up. One semester of college coursework isn’t going to be enough to stand out against what will likely be a very strong spring class, especially considering that by the time you get those grades in early January, the incoming class may already be full.

That’s why I said fall 2010 is going to be much more realistic. I don’t mean to be discouraging, but we want applicants to know that it’s going to be tight this spring.

Chris

It’s this early in the fall, and you’re already predicting a 2.8-2.9 when you know you need a 3.0 to transfer? Somehow I think you can still do something about that!

And since Chris is one of the people making admissions decisions, you should really be paying attention to what he says even if it’s unfortunately not what you want to hear.

Idk if SBU gave me the right info but they said the reason why I didn’t get in was because they said I applied way to late and its rolling admissions. I had a 90 average with a 1700 sat score meanwhile classmates I’ve known have had a drastically lower score than me. So possibly me being denied was because I applied really late? So that’s why I want to give it another chance because I don’t want that factor of applying late be the reason for me not being accepted into that school. And from learning form hat experience, I’ve already finished applying to stony brook for the spring semester so that applying late doesn’t affect me lol

yea i know i should be taking ur info into more consideration lol its just that im really eager and determined to know whats going to happen lol cuz i called stony brook admissions office recently and they gave me a whole different story and said my chances are very possible of getting in so idk what to listen to lol

How can you even know that you may get a 2.8 / 2.9, its early september!? I haven’t even gotten any grades on any assignments yet, let alone can I predict what my GPA might be this semester.

Just study 1 hour for every hour that your in class plus do your homework, and you should be able to pull off at least a 3.0

because i took summer college courses at Fordham and they gave me one ultimate grade and it came out to a 2.5 so im trying to work to a 3.0 at least but im just saying 2.8 or 2.9 because i might not pull it off the 1st semester

YMVC, in my opinion, they ask for your high school transcripts because you haven’t established a “reputation” per say as a college student. 24 credits is “reputation” standards. To the colleges you’re applying to, having 24 or more credits means you’ve completed at least two semesters as a college student, and have a cumulative GPA that consists of the (hopefully) high grades you’ve received in about 8 classes. It also shows colleges that you’re not in the “I don’t think college is for me” stage, and are committed to doing well.

Out of curiosity what is the GPA - Grade Conversion at Stony Brook.
4.0 - 100
3.5 - ?
3.0 - ?
2.5 - ?
2.0 - ?
Also do honors classes get weighted into your GPA differently?
