Im a Sophmore at CUNY Hunter and Im thinking of transferring to SUNY Stony Brook for the Spring 2010 semester. I have 37 completed credits and a gpa of 3.7. Does anyone know what my chances of admission are?

As far as I know, your chances are great.
I heard you need a 3.0 gpa and 24 credits.
Good Luck!

thanks! Would you or anyone happen to know what the housing situation is like for transfers? Is there a good chance of getting on campus housing?

Incoming freshmen are given priority. Transfer students are on a rolling basis, I believe. I’m pretty much on the same boat as you, I’m a transfer looking to be accepted with 25 credits (30+ after this semester ends) and a 3.6 GPA.

Steven89- Let me know what happens with your admissions because Im actually really nervous about being rejected lol. How do you think your chances are?

Izzy,
I’m nervous too. I want to get into Stony Brook badly, or else I’ll have to go out of state/upstate (to Albany) for my intended major. Plus I haven’t applied to any other schools yet, and my best friend goes to Stony.

We should know starting mid-November about the Spring. You’re looking to transfer for the Spring semester, right?

Yes Im attempting to transfer for Spring. My biggest issue is the chances of getting housing. It would be much easier to stay at my current school with a dorm then commute to Stony Brook everyday without one. I heard the chances are about 50/50 which sounds…well chancey lol. Isn’t the transfer process the most fun ever??

Oh, yeah… fun… right. haha
I want to go to Stony badly enough that I’m willing to go through it, though.

well stonybrook is a pretty easy school to get into, however, once in it, it is very competitive in the science n math fields. i believe only 37% graduate in 4 years. However, if ur smart/determined u should have no problem staying on target. they also have various levels of science and math courses, so finding one which suits ur level is very important to maintain a high gpa while still learning to your maximum potential.

did anyone get any responses yet from stony

Steven and Izzy, both of you will get in with your academic records…I just can’t guarantee it’ll happen for the spring semester. I transferred here with a 4.0 in fall 2008, and everyone I knew with a 3.5 or better got in. I do know of some students who with a 3.5+ who didn’t get in last spring, but were admitted for fall 2009. It’s true that you “need” a 3.0/24 credits, but it’s getting competitive. I got into some other schools and wanted to hear about financial aid packages before accepting my slot at Stony Brook, but they made me put down a full deposit by May 1st because so many people on the wait list.

Izzy, Hunter has a fantastic reputation. I would have transferred there, but SB’s honors college offered me full tuition, whereas I couldn’t even apply to CUNY’s honors program as a transfer. Unless you have some compelling reason for wanting to transfer (you are really unhappy at Hunter, or you have tons of friends at SB, etc.), think about it before you transfer. I’m not knocking SB, but many students feel isolated here, especially transfer students. EVERY school is what you make of it, and of course there are people who are happy here, but just remember that the grass isn’t always greener…that said, I’m a returning adult student who is commuting and I’m very happy with my choice. But I’m engaged, living off campus, and supporting myself, so my needs from a college are very different from yours. I’m just letting you know that many “traditional” students are not quite as happy with the student life here. I’m completely unbiased on this subject; I only know what I’ve heard from others. It just merits mentioning to people who are already well-adjusted to another school.

I can tell you this…I am going to graduate this May, but I’m taking 23 credits right now and a winter class to make sure I graduate on time. One thing that’s frustrating is that most upper-level courses only offer one section per semester; in fact, courses like Biochemistry are only offered once a year! Be vigilant in planning your schedule; you may find that courses required for your major conflict with other required courses and you have to take something over the summer (or winter, if permitted). I went to Rutgers years ago–it’s at least twice the size of SB, and they had far more sections of required courses offered throughout the year. On the plus side, my major has been terrific; the faculty is supportive and the students are close-knit. I had no problem finding a research lab and some really great extracurricular activities.

Whatever you choose, I wish both of you the best of luck!! It sounds like you’re bright and motivated students who will do well wherever you go. If you don’t get in this semester, it’s only because it IS on a rolling basis and there aren’t too many slots. However, the fact that many students have to stay an extra semester and graduate in December may work to your benefit. I’m sure that you’ll get in for fall 2010 if you don’t get in this spring.

Thanks, Focused. I applied for the Fall '09 semester but was rejected because I didn’t have 24 credits yet. This is my second time applying… and I’m hoping and praying for the best.

Steven, I wouldn’t worry. You’ll get in, and you’ve already had a fantastic college record. May I ask where you are right now?

Focused, I go to a community college in Queens right now. I’m a member of their Honors Society-- something I hope my current school told Stony when they sent the application. Anyhow, if SBU looks up my name, they’ll probably see the CollegeFish account, and now I’m finding myself hoping that colleges do their homework in checking out who their applicants are (even though I know that’s probably not the case-- I wouldn’t expect them to check on thousands of applicants).
Thanks again for the kind words.

it says that my application is complete but it also has a sign for new students… does that mean that i was accepted

zman,

Yes, if you have the New Students tab and it’s asking you have the “Pay Initial Deposits/Fee” things under the New Students tab, it means you’ve been accepted.
I got the New Students tab today, too! I feel like jumping up and down like a 5-year-old!

congrats guys. Does that new tab come up on SOLAR System? I probably won’t get in but i’m keeping my fingers crossed anyway.

mj,

Yup, once you log into SOLAR you’ll see it below where the three tabs you’re used to seeing are (“Security and Personal Data”,“SB Alert Emergency Information” and “Student Admission”). The two new tabs are “For New Students” and “Student Financial Services”.

Good luck mj. Admissions are on a rolling basis, so I believe you’ll know depending on when you submitted your application for the Spring.

hey steven. Are you sure that about the new student tab means being accepted. Maybe they put it there for all applicants. I jus want to make sure cause i have it. did you call them up to ask? btw congrats

junglerav,

I already completed my New Students Preferences and paid my fees. I’m waiting for an orientation date in the mail. I’d venture to guess that they wouldn’t have allowed the credit card # and whatnot for the fees to process if it wasn’t definite.

Also, I’m not new to SBU’s system (as I applied as a transfer for the Fall but was denied because I didn’t have the required credits yet), and the New Students Tab was talked about last semester here on the CC forums when I was still waiting to hear.

Congrats to you too! Best of luck to everyone else!
