I am a current student at a Community College with a 3.7 GPA. At the end of this semester I will be done with my Freshman year. I met with my counselor and she told me that I have a lot more classes to do, even though I am almost done with my IGETC/GE. She said that it is not required but highly suggested to do as much of your business major classes here and then apply to the school you wish to go to. The problem is that if I try to fit it all into my next semester I am scared if my GPA will drop and I am not sure if I wish to stay another year to spread out the classes. Pretty much I am just asking is it really highly suggested to finish my business major requirements before I go to the school I transfer into? Like when visiting assist.com I can see what my major classes are at my school compared to the schools I wish to go to in California (Public). Also my ideal school to go to is NYU Stein. I found the schools required coursework and will definitely finish those, but for other public schools in California like UC Berkeley or UCLA it asks for a lot more than Stern from assist.com. Thanks for the help

Can’t speak specifics but aren’t the bulk of major courses usually taken in the 3rd and 4th yr of undergrad. I would think that if you completed your Gen eds and intro business courses you should be good for transfers.

Your counselor is completely backwards. If anything, you do your Gen Eds at a Community College then transfer and take your business related courses. Transfer now if you feel you want to, or stay another year and knock out some more gen eds. Your call.

I plan to finish all my Gen Ed’s and transfer at the end of my second year of CC. Then my counselor told me I need to finish my major requirements like 2 semesters of Econ, 2 semesters of Accounting, 1 semesters of Applied Calculus and Geometry, 1 semester of Calculus and Trigonometry. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Wouldn’t I take most of those classes at the school I am transferring to?

You don’t need to do anything like that. You can transfer whenever you want to. That counselor has no idea what she’s saying.

Is it more recommended if I do finish all of those, like will my chances be higher to get into UCLA, Berkeley, or NYU. Or would it be better for me to work more on my extracurriculars and less classes.

I know that for the UC’s it’s extremely difficult (if not impossible) to transfer into them without 60 credit hours. The UC’s are pretty picky about the classes you take at CC’s and they like to see students who not only take gen eds, but also a couple of the courses that you will need for your major (so they can see if you’re good at the courses required for your field of study I suppose). If you have those requirements, then I hear that they’re extremely transfer friendly. I’ve read that some of the UC’s have a higher acceptance rate for transfer students than they do for freshman. If I were you I would go to the UC website and read up on transferring. I have no idea about NYU though, sorry :(.

but to clarify, you absolutely don’t need to take any sort of business courses before you can transfer out. This is a trait that’s pretty unique to the UC school system and many schools would be glad to take you with less than 60 hours and only Gen Eds.

Well I was looking over the UC Berkley assist.org articulation agreement and it says:
[ASSIST Report: WVC 10-11 UCB Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)
This is the articulation report for my school to UC Berkeley. It says that I must finish all of the pre-requisites which consist of:
1 semester of busines
2 semesters of Calculus
2 semesters of Econ
1 semester of Stat (Already done)
Is that all right? Is it required or lets say would I be able to apply with 2 semesters of econ done and 1 of business with still a good chance of getting in? Wouldn’t colleges prefer you taking your major requirements at their school?

I ain’t sure about UCs but at my 4-year school 2 semesters of Calculus (Calc I and II) and 2 semesters of Econs (Intro to maco & micro) and 1 semester of stats (elementary stats) are pre-req for major coures so they are not even considered major courses but you will have to take them in order to be able to take major courses and they will count towards electives (sometimes towards gen ed as well)

So IMO, schools prefer you to take major courses at their schools but major pre-req at others before you transfer.

That articulation list you linked says right at the top:

The UC and CSU schools want to you take your freshman and sophomore level courses for your major and breadth at community college, so that after you transfer as a junior, you will be able to complete your bachelor’s degree in 4 semesters or 6 quarters.

Ya I just realized that. I guess I have a lot of classes to take :/. Thanks everyone
