Transfer Student>> URGENT/BURNING QUESTION?<<

Hey! Please take some time to read this b/c I need you guys help desperately. So these past few days I have been suffering major insomnia due to my poor mid term grade.

So I'm currently a college freshmen in a transfer process to Amherst, Mt.Holyoke, Smith for FALL 2012. I recently gave Midterms and unfortunately I did really bad in my CHEM 1100 exam. With that said, I'm planning to drop out of that course because I feel colleges will not accept me with any low grade. But since I have already paid for the Chem course this semester, I don't know if it's really worth dropping. What do you think? Also if I do drop then I will have a "W" >>Withdrawal << on my report card. I don't know if that's any better than getting a low grade in transcript.

IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS THEN PLEASEEEEE FEEL FREE TO SHARE.

What are the chances of you getting an acceptable grade? Can you get a C, B, or A and what are the chances that you will get that grade? Why did you do poorly on your midterm? Could you ask for a grade of Audit instead?

Just an FYI most schools do not care about 1 W on your transcript, but you could always ask a transfer adviser at the school you are hoping to transfer to, to get a better understanding of their view on W grades.

Hi

I am also a freshman hoping to transfer this fall. Last semester, I was in a similar predicament. I intend on transferring to Notre Dame, which has very strict requirements for the courses you need to take. I was taking Calculus, but I did dreadfully on my first exam. It was impossible for me to get a B in the course, and a B is required for the course to transfer. I contacted an admissions counselor from Notre Dame, and she told me that it was in my interest to drop the course, otherwise it would just be a drag on my GPA and it obviously would not transfer. A lot of people that get accepted as transfers at Notre Dame get a pass if they technically fall short of the requirements, as long as they take a summer course or take the missing course their first semester at Notre Dame. There are now two Ws on my transcript, but there is also a nice 4.0 with every other course I need on it to transfer besides the missing math course. If I had stayed in Calculus, I would have about a 3.65 GPA with a Calculus course on my transcript that Notre Dame won’t count anyway.

I don’t know if your college operates this way, but if I were you I would drop it if:

There is no possibility that your grade can improve.

Your grade is so low that the course would not transfer.

The course is not required to transfer, and you can still make up for it if it is required.

You should contact Amherst and see if there is a specific grade you must meet for the course to transfer. This is only my amateur opinion, and I don’t know if my strategy paid off yet.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.

I would drop this course but I realized that Amherst requires transfer students to have at least 30 credits in order to be eligible for transfer process. And currently, with my CHEM 1100 course I have a total of exactly 30 credits. However, if I drop chem then I will be short of 5 Credits and thus be ineligible for Amherst. And the reason I am so reluctant to give up on Amherst so easily is because I had literally working on Amherst personal statements and supplement essays for three months straight and proofread the essays million times. So the thought of giving up on Amherst is just too much for me.

In regards to improving my poor grade, I had actually talked to my CHEM professor about my circumstance and asked him if there is anything I could do to improve my grade. But he refused to provide extra credit or anything related to that even though the majority of the class got a low grade. The reason I did poorly was because of my English class. My English professor requires us to read and write extensively for the class and so I have to spend numerous hours trying to finish the assignments and reading for that class which barely leaves me no time for CHEM. I’m currently taking 17 credits this semester so it’s really hard to balance the workload of my five classes. But that maybe because I’m a freshmen.

Since my application is for Fall transfer, I was thinking of asking the college admissions if I can change it and instead apply for Spring Transfer 2012. That way I can send them my Final grade of this semester instead of my current Mid term grades. But I don’t know if that is possible. What do you guys think?

I THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE THOUGHTFUL RESPONSES AND I HOPE YOU GUYS WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE YOUR FEEDBACK ON THIS ISSUE. I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP.

What grade did you get on the midterm?

55-Fail. I don’t know how could I get this grade when I had been preparing for this very exam the entire week like a maniac knowing that this very grade will be sent to colleges. The worst part is that I got the complex questions right and all the simple ones wrong.

Realistically can you get a grade that will transfer? If you can I would stay in the class and work harder. Does Amherst transfer your gpa or do you start with a clean slate. It looks like the mean GPA for a transfer is 3.25. I would just leave your application as is, apply for Fall 2012 and see what happens. If you only have 30 with your chem class if you do not end with a grade that is transferable then you end up with the same thing as if you had taken a W as a grade; not enough credits to transfer. If you can get a C in chem and have a gpa above 3.25 then write some really good essays and give it a shot.

Amherst does transfer credits if that’s what you are asking. I spoke to one of my professors and she said W grade is better than failing the course b/c it will not affect my GPA. In my CHEM class, there is only 2 tests:midterm and a final. No extra credit. None of that good stuff. This puts much pressure on me to perform extremely well on my Finals to at least get a decent grade. But colleges at this point only want my Mid Term grade for this semester. After contemplating this situation for hours, I thought of a possible solution. Here it is…

Upon my request, if Amherst is willing to accept me as Spring transfer, then I am assuming I will not have to send my midterm grade but only my Final grade for this semester and the midterm grade for Fall 2013.So I this will allow me to drop CHEM because by the time I will apply for Spring 2013 on November 2012 I will have accumulated over 30 credits as a sophomore. However right now I will continue to apply to Mt.Holyoke and Smith for Fall Transfer since they don’t require any specific number of credit. Also Smith is tight with their Financial Aid so Spring transfer would not work great for me in their case. If by any chance I get into these two colleges as fall transfer then great! If not then I still have amherst to apply towards the spring semester.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF THE PLAN? LIKE? DISLIKE?..

I was actually asking if they transfer your GPA when they transfer credits, I checked and they do not transfer the GPA so you get a clean slate when it pertains to your GPA after you transfer.

You are only graded on a midterm and a final? No homework, no paper, absolutely nothing else? Are both the midterm and final both worth 50% of your grade?

As for your idea, it does not seem like you are dead set on Amherst as you are willing to take the other schools if accepted.
If you are dead set on Amherst then finish the class, get a C or better, and hope you get in.
