how hard is it to Transfer into Chico State or San Diego State?

I currently go to Butte College and im planning on transfering to Chico State Spring 2012 as a Mechanical Engineering Major Upper-Division Transfer Student.

My gpa is a 2.9 overall. (will be a 3.1 overall after fall semester but they wont see that till after i get in or not)

couple of questions

1.) Should i apply for an easier major just so i can get in then once im a student i can change my major?
2.) there still is a couple of math classes i need to take for some upper-division courses as an ME major at Chico State, so can i still transfer and just take them at Chico State instead of staying at a junior college? -side note- i have 61 transferable units and all the right classes in right areas to transfer

Ok so this is my first time using cc and I really need some good advice. I am currently a sophomore at Georgia Perimeter college with 33 credits, 3.7 gpa, and I’m in the honors program there as well. I also do a great amount of service work around my community and will be able to get great reccomendations from many professors. I am planning to transfer to another university for the Spring 2012. I wasn’t very motivated in high school and had a gpa of 2.45 and SAT score of 960. Some schools that I’m looking at are:
Virginia Tech
UCONN
Virginia
Indiana
Clemson
Boston College
Miami (Florida) University
Alabama
South Carolina
University of Georgia

Please let me know what my chances of getting into these schools are, and if you have recently transferred somewhere, please tell me what your gpa was for you to get accepted. I have matured as a student and my high school transcript does not reflect on the student that I am today.

No one ever transfers to sdsu unless they are local. I know 30+ people that applied some with a gpa as high as 3.88 and they were all denied. Sdsu is probably one of the most impacted schools as far as applications in California.

“No one ever transfers to sdsu unless they are local.”

That statement is an exaggeration. Yes, school’s in their local service area get priority and they offer TAG only to those students, but people do transfer in from other CCs. They are really strict on requirements and the space available is usually very small. All GE’s and Major Pre-Reqs must be completed. No exception. If your school doesn’t offer it than you need to take it somewhere else. Your GPA has to be higher than the required 2.4 if you are coming from a non-local CC but they don’t say specifically by how much. There were 3 kids in my class last semester who got in and we are not in San Diego. It is always worth trying!

As for Chico, you are in their local service area so you shouldn’t have difficulties getting accepted. You well exceed their minimum GPA requirement and I didn’t see anything on their site referring to pre-reqs having to be complete. Obviously, it is best to complete as many as you can but I don’t know if missing a few will hurt your chances. I would email admissions and ask them what their policy is regarding pre-reqs.

If you want to apply to SDSU as well, you could complete your pre-reqs in the Spring Semester and apply to both schools for the Fall 2012 since SDSU is only taking Fall apps.
