Transfer Students for Second Year College BA to BFA

Hello. I am currently a freshman student at Columbia College Chicago Theatre BA, and I would like something a little more deep and a better acting college overall. I got waitlisted at BFA Acting in DePaul and rejected at NYU and Calarts. I was thinking of reapplying for those three schools as a transfer but I have some questions. 1) I’m a BA, and I want to go to a BFA, is that a problem? 2) Do I have better chances this year or next year once I move to the BFA? 3) Do I have chances AT ALL in those three schools? Thank you.

It shouldn’t be a problem to re-audition as a transfer, but realize that the likelihood of you having to start over as a freshman is very high.
There will be likely be less aid for you as a transfer than an incoming freshman as well.
As these are VERY competitive schools, there wouldn’t be “better chances” whether you stay a BA or try and transfer in as a BFA. It would be difficult regardless.
And to your question about overall chances- it…depends. Everything comes down to the audition and what the schools are looking for in a given year.
I did want to mention that at some schools, if you have applied in the past and were rejected, they will not allow you to audition again. Some schools only allow you to audition for them twice. I am not sure what NYU or Calarts policies are on that so you would have to research.

@calartsdreamer I would suggest emailing or calling the school to verify the re-application policies. As @stagedoormama said above, the aid may prove to be a bit of a problem. My S is a BFA 1 at CalArts this year. I know that one student is a transfer from another school. This student is a BFA 1 student which means they are starting over. I have also heard that another student completed another program and was not satisfied with the training and is now at CalArts. So, that is promising in that respect. I cannot speak to NYU, but it does seem like there are students with various experiences and ages at CalArts. Best of luck to you!!

One nice thing about NYU is that, if accepted, though you would have start as a 1st year, as long as you have enough credits etc, you could graduate on time, as you only have to have 3 years of studio to graduate

@calartsdreamer If you private message me, I can share some transfer info that I have learned so far. I’m also planning to re-audition.
