I know this is a common thread. But, I was recently accepted as a transfer student at FSU (a sophomore w/o AA). However, I've been studying facts and it seems UF is an all around better known and better academic school. I hope to eventually go to med school, so my undergraduate university really matters. Oh, and I never applied as a transfer to UF this year because they only take students with 60 credits.

I was wondering if I should stay at my current school (FIU) for another two semesters and then transfer to UF or go to FSU in the fall. Should I even consider transferring to UF? Is it really that much better?

I'm a Psychology/Neuroscience major btw.

Thanks!

Also, reasons for staying at FIU include: my boyfriend is there, good friends, better nightlife, beaches
But, my best friend goes to FSU and FSU has a much more attractive campus

FIU has a neuroscience major? Lol and I’m assuming you didn’t know UF is the best public university in florida, hands down? If it’s worth it to YOU to attend said school then your question is answered. However, you should consider the gamble of holding out to be able to apply to UF, applying, and then getting denied.
Either way you should transfer out of FIU, it’s not known outside of south florida (or the state of florida at best). UF is known nationally and is highly ranked all around. I think US world news ranked UF to be 50-something in the nation while FSU is 100-something (look it up). Oh, and FIU isn’t even ranked at all.

First, congratulations on getting accepted as a sophomore without an AA. That’s not easy to do.

Second, here are the USNews rankings in Psychology for the three schools:

FIU:

178 Psychology

FSU:

21 Educational psychology

50 Psychology

47 Clinical Psychology

UF:

45 Psychology

37 Clinical Psychology

Third, don’t get too caught up in rankings as they will almost certainly change during your lifetime. A few years ago, UF was ranked in the 40s. Now it’s pushing 60. During the same timeframe FSU moved from 112 to 101. In a couple of months, when the new rankings come out, I wouldn’t be surprised to see UF in the 60s and FSU in the 90s. UF still has the edge in rankings, but eventually the two schools will be close enough that it will be like Arizona State vs University of Arizona, or (a more flattering, and wishful, analogy) Berkeley vs UCLA.
