Transfer to UCLA in one year?

Hi, I know it would be incredibly difficult, but I was just wondering if it is possible to transfer to UCLA in one year. I am currently a high school senior about to graduate and go off to college, and I have SIR'ed to UC Santa Barbara. I was accepted to higher ranked schools but I could not choose them because they gave me zip financial aid (OOS public schools).

To be completely honest, I cannot imagine myself at UCSB at all. I have visited the campus twice and did not like the environment both times. My dream school is UCLA and always will be, not to mention my brother graduated from there and my sister currently goes there.

Lately I don't know if I even want to go to UCSB anymore. Is it faster and easier to transfer from a community college to UCLA than through inter-UC transfers? I have heard that the acceptance rate for inter-UC transfers is much lower because UC's place CCC transfers higher in priority. Is this true?

My main objective is just to be able to go to UCLA as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance!

That’s absolutely possible, in fact 1 of my friends is transferring this year as Business Econ that is a very impacted major. Just make sure your CC is a TAP participant & keep the GPA up

Hey themusiciangirl! I was in a similar situation last year. Last year, I too was on my way to attending UCSB as a freshman. Some time during the summer, I backed out because I wasn’t getting a lot of financial aid, and I didn’t want to take out about $18,000 of loans. I didn’t think UCSB was worth that much, so I decided to stay home and go to a community college. After doing some research, I found out that I could use my AP credit to transfer to my dream school, UCLA, in one year if I took heavy course loads during fall and spring semester. I got accepted to UCLA this month and will be attending there this upcoming fall.

It is possible to transfer to UCLA in one year. However, it really depends on your major, if you have AP credit, and if you can handle 18-21 or more units each semester. Your CC does not need to be a TAP participant, though it helps in situations where you’re a borderline applicant. And yes, it is much easier transferring from a CC than a UC because CC students have priority. Think about it, CC students have to transfer to a UC, or a CSU, whereas UC students can finish their education at their current UC.

If you want, I can help you out plan a one year plan. I would need to know some things first:
What is your major?
Do you have any units from summer sessions during high school?
Did you pass any AP exams? If so, which subjects and what scores did you get?
What community college are you planning to attend?
Did you take 3 years of a foreign language at a high school?

Thanks for the replies and advice SH2mathecon and ayymeer! :)

What is your major?
Psychology!

Do you have any units from summer sessions during high school?
No, sadly. I didn’t take any classes during any summers :(

Did you pass any AP exams? If so, which subjects and what scores did you get?
AP Bio - 4
AP Language & Comp - 4
AP US History - 3
AP Psychology - 5 (projected, just took it this May)
AP Calculus AB - 3 (projected, just took it this May)
I also took AP Literature as a class this year but decided against taking the AP test because it wouldn’t take away any credits since I already got a 4 in AP Lang. I also calculated the amount of units I have according to UCLA and UCSB, and I only have 32 units when you need 90 for junior-level transfer.

What community college are you planning to attend?
If I do end up going to community college, I will be planning to attend De Anza College, and it is TAP certified.

Did you take 3 years of a foreign language at a high school?
Yeup! I took 3 years of French up to the end of my junior year.

Thanks in advance @ayymeer :)

Ayymer, could you help me also? I can’t message you privately yet but here is my info.
Thank you so much!

What is your major?
Natural science- biology

Do you have any units from summer sessions during high school?

Did you pass any AP exams? If so, which subjects and what scores did you get?
AP World: 5
AP English Language: 5
AP Music Theory: 4
AP Biology, AP Psych, AP English Lit, AP Macro/Micro Econ, and AP Calculus AB this May.

What community college are you planning to attend?
Perhaps, City College of SF, Skyline or Pasadena College.

Did you take 3 years of a foreign language at a high school?
Yes, Korean!

Also, I can change my major if it makes it easier to transfer!

themusiciangirl, are you confusing semester units and quarter units?

It turns out that I actually decided to go to UCSB. And I could not love it more and I’m doing really well here! I don’t want to transfer anymore  But thanks for the help and good luck to people who still want to transfer!

@mikeyrawks - I was not confusing semester units and quarter units! You need 90 quarter units to transfer as junior-level

Thanks for the update musiciangirl. I’m surprised you saw this because it’s a year old thread.

@mermaker - no worries! Haha actually college confidential sent me an email about people posting replies so I figured I should update my transfer status. Just saying that if you know anyone who is writing off UCSB before they even think about it, that was me a year ago. I could not have been more wrong! It’s pretty crazy how much I love this school now. Great professors, challenging academics, and a beautiful campus :)
