I am a current student at a 4-year private college in Tampa, Florida. I plan on applying to the University of Florida as a transfer applicant for enrollment in the fall of 2020. Currently, I have a 3.75 GPA which is comprised of A’s in 9 courses, an A- in one course, a B in one course, and a C+ in one course (Biology 1 with Lab). According to the UF’s transfer site, students must have a 3.5 or higher to be competitive and must maintain a B or higher in every course on the first attempt. I received a C+ in Biology 1 which is a critical tracking course and I fear that this will eliminate me as an applicant. I called the advising office and they said that B’s are required because of how competitive psychology is to transfer into. However, I have well above their suggested GPA even with the C+ and I also have strong work/volunteer experience directly tied to my intended profession as a physician. I am torn because I have tried too hard for the past year and a half building my application for it to go to waste because of one class (the class average for the biology class was a C-). For those who transferred to UF as psychology majors or even those who have an understanding and/or idea of my predicament, please respond with any feedback or comments. Like I said, I have no idea what to do or how to proceed so your input is greatly appreciated. I don’t even know whether to apply or not because the lady I spoke with advised that I either change my major or not apply at all because I got a C+
Is the semester over? At least for the people that I know in university the first semester is still going on. None of them are in Florida however.
I think that you should talk to the professor, explain your situation, and ask if there is anything extra work that you can do to earn extra credit. Professors will vary in terms of what they are willing to do. Some may assign you extra work that you can do. If your final exam has not happened yet then another option would be to study very hard for your final.
At the moment I have straight A’s in my classes. Our current semester is indeed ongoing and will conclude in mid-December, however, the C+ that I received was last semester.
What is your college’s policy on grade forgiveness? Would it be possible to retake the class to improve your grade? It’s a hassle, I know, but if you’re worried about it, I would consider looking into that option.
@prospect_15 If you apply to Psychology then you’ll be denied. There is an appeal process where you can plead your case but Psychology but just that major receives more applications per year than 4 different UF Colleges. Any major at UF can get you to Med School, do you have a backup you can consider?
Hey Melissa! I completely forgot to update you on my situation. I was able to pull out of that biology 1 course with an 82%, which is a B-. Obviously it’s not great, but it’s not a C+ either which, as you stated, would have presumably invalidated me as a transfer candidate since only B’s or above are accepted for critical tracking courses as a psychology major. That said, however, will I be fine that it’s a B- and not a B or B+? On the site, it states that students “must have Bs or better on first attempts of critical tracking courses”, but I’m unsure as to whether a B- is acceptable. Given that I have a 3.76 gpa with A’s in all my other critical tracking courses, how will this B- affect my chances for admission.
Wow, I knew the psychology department was tough but I didn’t know it was that cut-throat. Can you elaborate more on what you mean by “borderline admittance”? From what you’ve seen in the past, how likely is it for a student to get admitted with one B- and 3.76?
