OK so I go to Quinnipiac University, just transferred here after a semester at Borough of Manhattan Community College, one of the best in the country. I had a 3.69 there, from an A in Poli Sci Econ and Spanish, and B in Calculus. Here, I think I'll probably wind up in the 3.5-4.0 range by the end of the semester, taking History 229, Econ 212, English Poli Sci and German 101, and I'll get an A in poli sci and German I know for sure,(tho I'd hate to jinx myself). I took the fall semester off after graduating a top ranked public high school with a 3.3, which was in part due to my abysmal senior year grades, but did reasonably well the rest of my high school career, with a 2010 on my SAT (710 V 620 M 680 W), was in Latin and Tri-M honor societies, all county honorable mention NYSSMA for guitar. I also played 3 sports from 9-12. At QU, I'm in College Democrats, and would do more activities except they all meet at the same time the same day, and I love politics. I'm from New York too, so I'm an out of state applicant. I did OK on my APs, got 15 credits from 5 APs here but doubt I'd get any credit at UMich except for World History on which I got a 4. Do I have a shot at UMich? What schools around UMich's range could I tfer into?

although i wouldnt completely dismiss you, umich and other similar schools seem like a pretty big reach

a 3.69 from a cc is far from impressive and if you are really serious about tfering to umich, a 3.5 from quinnipiac will not cut it either...definantly get as close as you can to the 4.0 of that 3.5-4.0 continuum that you mentioned

if i were you however, i would start looking at schools a little bit down from umich and the like...

^ dont listen to that, i think you have a superb chance at Umich. are you going to apply for Fall 09? cuz i would get on that asap if i were you. try to get atleast a 3.65 with your future classes, then you would be fine.

I agree with dufflebagjesus a 3.69 from a community college and a 3.5 from quinnipac (no offence but a school the admissions officers at Michigan have probably not ever heard of) is not going to get you into LS&A Poli-Science at U of M or impress the UMich admissions officers, especially when there are hordes of kids I know that will probably get 3.75's and higher from Michigan State Uni and 3.5's and higher from NYU that are trying to transfer into UMich you will need to do much better to be competitive with those students and beat them out for a transfer spot at Michigan

thanks^^

constable-

you need not refer to me as an object or be otherwise condescending in order to disagree with me...i'm assuming you too are applying to u mich and are nervous about your own transfer and taking your insecurities out on me...

best of luck

to respond to dufflebag, my CC GPA was a 3.69 because I got an A in everything except calculus, in which I got a B. They can look at my SAT and see math is my weak point, I got a 620 on the mat SAT I but got a 710 and 680 on Verbal and Writing, respectively. Oh, and people have heard of Quinnipiac University. My school does all those public opinions polls which are constantly cited on TV and in the news. Its not some little school in the middle of bumble****.

That being said, where should I look? I want an academic upgrade, not just a mere change of scenery. I would have gone to a normal school after HS, except for certain conditions which prevented it. I actually am rather intellectual although I like to have a good time. The kids here really don't aren't my speed, they're not really all that smart or interested, and really shallow. No one here pays attention to the world, which I do. Plus, the housing is awful, as all transfers live in this off campus apartment complex where I have had a difficult time making friends, although that of course is not my main reason for wanting to transfer. But I really don't think I fit in well here.

you got all A's and one B and you have a 3.69 what did you take like 10 credits? even with a 12 credit schedule(not considered competitive at Umich) if you got all A's and a B that would be a 3.8 at worst

erm, ok let me explain this to you, dufflebagjesus.
by "That" I meant the STATEMENT you made, not YOU as a person. Unless I am very mistaken, a statement is an object, and therefore it is appropriate for me to refer to it as "That" But, I'm sorry if you took it offensively, I just dont agree with your STATEMENT, but Im pretty sure you're a nice person.

As for your chances Lakrosse, your stats might be a little low (or as to what people said so far), but there is no harm in trying. If you write good essays and maybe even get a recommendation even though its not required for the app, you might still have a chance. Theres certainly no harm in applying.

good luck!

ramen, my CC had a weird way of calculating GPA. I took 13 credits there. GPA Calculator is a link to show how I had a 3.69, with poli sci, econ, and spanish each being 3 credits, in which I got all As. I got a B in calculus, which was 4 credits. Its some quality points thing.

Constable, what competitive schools could I apply to? I want to move out of the "master's university" range in the US News, and get a school in the top 50 or top 60 national universities. I'll also take good liberals arts schools.

hmmm, I think I would need more information to give you that kind of advice, such as your intended major, your regional preferences, financial situation..etc.
Some national unis with a decent rep that you can look into are UIUC, Indiana University, maybe some of the lower UCs like UCSB, UCI, UCD. Or, since you said you're from NY, why dont you look at some of the SUNYs?

I'm not asking for any financial aid whatsoever, I am undeclared but leaning toward econ or poli sci, and would prefer the northeast but I'd love UMich anyway, or something good on the west coast. I'd also prefer not to go to a SUNY
