With 4.0 gpa and 1360 SATs (CR & M) and great EC (Student Body President, Soccer Captain etc) coming from a religiously quaker school, how difficult would it be to transfer from an average state LAC to perhaps a top 20? Im a freshman now so I figure high school stats are more important? However I will plan on having a a 3.8+ after my first year. And I'm a computer science major. I'm not looking to transfer to a Carnegie Mellon of sorts, but a reputable university with a solid CS program. Help me out here please!

UMich has a great CS program I’ve heard, and it’s pretty lenient with transfers I think. I’m not definitive though.

UMich sounds great to me just hopefully I sound as good to them haha.

Are there any suggestions for a respectable CS program at an esteemed university in the mid-atlantic region? Just curious

With a 4.0, a 1360 SAT score, and the ECs you mentioned, I think you’d have a great shot at many top-20 schools. Now, the important question: Do you actually have these stats, or are they just hypotheticals?

No, I actually do have these stats…

transfers2010 what do you think would be a good fit for me?

Can you really be sure at this point that you’ll have a 3.8? Have you gotten midterm grades yet?

I guess now is the time to be conceited. By what my professors have told me will be on the exam, their ratemyprofessor.com ratings, and upperclassmen story-telling I don’t see how I won’t get a 3.8+ in my intro classes. I’m also considering just applying as a freshman again since the transfer rates seem to be worse off than regular admission rates.

Careful – not all schools allow you to relinquish credit in order to apply as a freshman.

Hanna, do you think top 20 schools are out of reach, assuming I do get a 3.8 GPA after my freshman year? If no, which ones are most suitable for me? I have a mental list but I also want to hear from others.

I have no idea what would be best for you, but Top 20 may well be within reach if you get a 3.8. Applying as a sophomore, your HS achievements will still matter.

Thanks Hanna! I just want out of here and hopefully I’ll be moving up!
