Hello I’m a high school graduate and I’m starting my freshman year tommrow at New York City college of technology. I slacked off in high school and got poor yet passing grades as a result in most of my classes. I’m majoring in fashion merchandise at city tech. My questions(s) if miraculously I’m able to turn it around in community college do college takes that into account when trying to transfer? I plan to apply to a few schools manly FIT, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Binghamton, buff state etc. I got a 1250 superscored I think I should retake it. Can anyone give me some advice or has been in a similar situation. I heard that also doing some clubs/ community service might help my chances as well can anyone give me some ideas on how I can make my application as a transfer more appealing despite my poor high school grades?
Isn’t CIty Tech a four year school? A 1250 is probably fine for Oneonta and FIT, as well as Buff State and after you have a year of college, most schools don’t look at HS GPA or test scores for transfers anyway, so I would focus on keeping my current GPA as high as possible rather than devoting time to studying for the SAT again.
Look at the transfer pages for each school you are interested in to see what they require. Also look at the charts to see how or if your classes will transfer. For instance, my H wanted S17 to attend a SUNY community college for a year and then try to transfer. When we looked at the program he wanted to take, it turned out that none of the courses would transfer in the major and he’d have to do 4 years at the other SUNY anyway. So, he just began at the other SUNY. Use the equivalency charts to figure out what classes to take this year.
Good luck.
thanks for the insight however I’ve seen visited binghamton and really want to transfer. Ive learned that Binghamton does in fact look at your high school gpa if you have not completed 24 credits at the time of applying and unfortunately i wont meet that limit. Do you think if im able to get a high gpa in city tech that it will outweigh my poor high school grades?
I don’t know, but I would think that a high GPA in college would outweigh or at least balance out a poorer GPA in HS. You can also address the issue in your essay. Good luck.

You have almost answered your own question here. Whether your high school grades matter will depend upon how many classes you have completed at your community college. Certainly your community college classes will also count, and if you do very well at community college this will make a strong statement regarding your preparedness for university.
One possible plan: Work very hard at community college and strive to get all A’s. Apply to transfer after one year. If you don’t get accepted then keep working hard at community college and continue to strive for A’s, and apply again to transfer after two years.
I do know people who slacked off in high school, then did very well at either community college or a “not all that strong” university, then transferred to an academically very strong university and did very well.
You need to successfully complete 30 credits with a minimum of a 3.0 gap. In order for your high school recoYour chances would even be better if you complete the associates and transfer to a 4 year Suny. This way becAuse you would be transferring the degree you would not lose credits in the process. Read the articulation agreement pages to see which majors would give you the best chance of an automatic admission. You really want to make sure that you cleanly transfer your core gen eds
