Hi, I'm going to be attending JMU for the 2011-2012 (Fall of 2011 till Summer of 2012- Freshman Year). I'd like to attend UVA for my Sophmore year as a transfer.

1) How many course credits do I need to complete freshman year in order to meet the march 1st transfer application deadline?

2) Also, If i'm ON MY WAY to completing the amount of course credits needed to transfer for the 2012 Fall semester, can I still apply? The transfer site for UVA isn't really clear on this matter.

3) How important are my high school grades/test scores for transferring in as a sophmore?

4) What can i do to help my chances of being sucessfully admitted as a transfer? High gpa, ecs

thanks preciate the time you put into the response. My high school stats= what makes me most unsure. Going to work my *ss off frshman year (as close to a 4.0 as possible) and not party much. I really wanna get into UVA.

UVA requires that you have 30 credits by the end of your freshman year, but it’s fine if you’re in the middle of completing them since the application is due in March.

Your high school grades will be weighed heavily. If your high school stats weren’t strong, I would not get my hopes up. Even if you get a 4.0, they will only have one semester to go by. 5-6 As/1 semester is not usually enough to outweigh four years of sub-par scores. That said, take a variety of core classes. You want to be “transferable,” which means having a lot of your pre-reqs taken care of before you begin major classes. Finally, get involved at JMU. Leadership positions never hurt, and you want to appear passionate and likeable on your application.

Good luck, but don’t get your hopes up. I will be entering UVA this fall after waiting for three years. I’ll be on the five year track, but it was worth it.

Don’t worry – plenty of kids at my school have done exactly what you want to do. They’re at UVA now, and doing very well. I assume you’re in-state, which gives you an advantage. Do your best to get a 4.0 this semester, and keep it up for the mid-term report. Like Brische said, get into clubs at JMU and strive for leadership positions. Just don’t go into the process with the ‘I’ll be out as soon as possible mentality’ – give JMU a chance (you’re there for the first semester, anyway; I’m not sure if UVA accepts spring transfers).
