Hello, so I had a really tough time witht the transition to college. I delt with anxiety, depression, and loss of a loved one all while trying to adjust to college life 11 hours from my home. The outcome of this was a low gpa…Really low. It was a 1.30 after my first semester was done, putting me on academic probation. I decided to take the next semester off to try and get my life together. After addressing my mental health and getting help for that. I am finally stable enough to return to college, but I can see now that my first college was not the right one for me, and I fear that returning will only make things worse. I want to transfer but I didn’t know if I could considering how low my gpa is and I do not have academic good standing. Is there anyway a college could overlook my poor performance first semester due to my disability? I had outstanding grades in high school and great SATs. I just think I need to be closer to home so I can continue to work on my mental health.
You might consider attending a community college to repair your GPA.
I considered this however my high school group of friends all go to community college, and they tend to get themselves into a lot of drug/alcohol related trouble. At one point I participated in the delinquency however I have cleaned up my act for obvious reasons. I fear that spending time with them might make me fall into old habits.
Contact the places you would like to transfer to, and ask them about this. Some may be willing to work with you given that the low grades had to do with a medical situation.
