Hey, I just wanted to know what type of GPA do you need to transfer in?
I want to be an econ major.
Should I apply after Freshman or Sophmore year?

GPA somewhat depends on from where one transfers. Unless the courses one is taking can arguably be matched to the Core, I would guess the earlier one transfers the better.

I'm currently a sophomore and I just got in as a transfer student with a 3.78 GPA.

sweetsangria,

Congratulations!!!!

Where are you transferring from? Why?

What a good GPA to have from a mediocre school?

While the school has impact, the courses make a difference as well. A high GPA (3.8) that includes courses such as honors calculus has more weight than college algebra I for example. It is more difficult to transfer up a tier, not too difficult to transfer across a tier. Columbia to Chicago would be pretty easy, Western Illinois University to Chicago would be more difficult, but not impossible. I have known graduates of the City Colleges of Chicago (two-year community colleges) that have successfully transferred to Chicago.

Thanks newmassdad! I'm transferring from Carleton College in Minnesota. I'm transferring because my LAC is too small and I want to work on gay activism in a much bigger area.

I'm currently a sophomore too, I got in with a GPA of 3.85 from a very small LAC in Massachusetts. You won't have heard of it, but UChicago has (4 of my personal friends from the same school got in as well-- that's at least 5 people, maybe more, getting in transfer in one year).

I was just rejected for transfer admissions with a 3.83... it's okay, though, because U of C was like my last choice. Nothing against those who want to go there... I was just a bit intimidated by the difficulty level. Good luck to all of those still waiting, though :D
