Transferring/attending community college first

I'm a junior in high school and would like to move back to the Seattle area to attend UW after I graduate. I attended Newport for a year and a half.

I won't take the time to post my stats, but I'm pretty sure that I would be able to get into UW. However, even though I lived in Bellevue for most of my life, I would most likely be considered as an OOS student. With that being said, there is no way I would find 24k lying around for my college tuition even with scholarships and whatnot.

I am considering going to Western because it is cheaper (somewhere around 17k) or attending BC in Bellevue. I do know that it is basically a community college and that it is looked down upon. However, it would save me around $16,000 for the first year over UW. How easy would it be to transfer to UW? Is it much harder to transfer from a community college than accepting their offer right out of high school (considering I get in, of course)? Also, I've heard that it is close to impossible to transfer from another 4-year university. Is this true?

Well in California we have this thing where if you attend the community college for 2 years, you are guaranteed into one of the higher state colleges of the UCs. Perhaps there is a similar system offered in your area for UW?

And I believe it is always harder to transfer simply because colleges receive many applications every year (recently the number of students attending college have only increased) and they leave very little room reserved for transfers. You also have to go through the entire application process again.

I’ve heard UW looks very favorable on the Associate of Arts Direct Transfer degree that the WA community colleges offer. It basically takes care of all their core requirements.

But UW has a specific language requirement, so be sure to look into that if you go for the AA-DT.
