Hey guys,
I’m applying to a variety of public and private business schools for a finance degree and I’ve hit a small snag. I was recommended to take Calculus for business majors which is a 3 unit course at my local community college. After doing much more thorough research, I’ve realized that the business calc courses at real universities are often 4 unit courses (ie Villanova, Rutgers, Northeastern). As a result, they told me my 3 unit class won’t actually satisfy the requirement and Rutgers went a step further and told me I won’t even be admitted if I don’t take a 4+ unit calc course by may 2017 :(. Technically speaking, I didn’t qualify for the 5-unit regular calculus course at my community college when I took the assessment in spring 2015 (I had been on hiatus from CC for 3 years and had no idea what to expect). I’m not allowed to re-take the assessment more than every 3 years so I’m kind-of stuck here.
Is it worth it for me to take the business calc 2 course in the spring in the hopes that I can argue that 6 semester units in Bus calc 1&2 should transfer for a 4 unit course? Does anybody have any experience doing something like this? Basically trying to satisfy 1 course requirement with 2 courses?
Thanks for helping, and I hope this is in the right place - it kind of has to do with universities on my list.
I got the run around from schools.
—> You’re not a student so we can’t do a transfer credit analysis
—> You won’t be accepted without taking the right course. Especially Rutgers, I tried to reach out to multiple people in the hopes one could offer me a shred of help but instead I got the same person calling me back telling me she can’t help me.
I tried but at my community college all they do is say “well this would qualify for a transfer for uc or csu”. Most useless community college staff I’ve ever experienced
I think that’s the way to go. Calculus is notoriously tricky for 1:1 placement. Having two CC or high school calculus courses count for a single university course is very common.
You might want to look at the Rutgers course catalog description for the course you’re trying to match. (Do the same for the other schools too.) Make sure that you can see on your CC’s published course descriptions that the same material is covered. If you aren’t sure, because terminology can differ, show the descriptions to your current calc teacher and see if he/she can tell you if how/if they match up.
I’m going to submit a petition to the math department to let me take real calculus but I’m already enrolled in Bus Calc 2 for spring 2017 just in case I get denied.
Bentley University is the only one on my list that requires 2 calculus courses so if that’s where I choose to go I can take either bus calc 2 or regular calc 2 over the summer around here.
