Hello, I'm going to be (hopefully) transferring schools next semester (for spring 2010), and I was wondering if my financial aid will go with me? I'm getting grants and federal loans, and I'm staying in the same state. I've already got my awards lined up for next semester, and I put the school I want to transfer to on my FAFSA form a few days ago, will my aid not come with me? Did I add my school too late? What other steps should I take to ensure my aid comes with me? If I did add the school too late, would it come with me to a school that was on the form from the beginning of the year? I really don't know how all of this works. I'm going from Columbia College Chicago, to University of Loyola Chicago. Any info would be great!

No your aid does not go with you. Aid, including federal and state aid, is awarded and administered by each school. Having your awards lined up at school 1 does not mean they will go with you to school 2. You have to apply for aid at the school you are transferring to. They will have to award it to you for next semester.

Some may be different to what you currently have. Some is the same at whichever school you go to. For instance the Pell and Stafford loans should be the same. Other federal aid that is campus based may be different. For instance The SEOG, the Perkins and Work Study. Each school sets their own criteria for those - both how much to award and how to award them. For instance my son’s school awards a maximum of $200 SEOG but my daughters awards a maximum of $2,000 SEOG. His school does not have the Perkins loan. Hers does. His school does not award WS. Hers awards up to $3400. Also these programs have very limited funding so may not be available for Spring transfers as they may have no funding left.

And of course any institutional aid will not be the same.

Is it likely too late for me to apply for aid at any new school now, or will it be ok because I filled my FAFSA out on time? Does anyone know?

The deadlines for Spring aid are later than those for fall aid. You would have to check with the school you are applying to for their specific deadlines. You should be fine for Pell and Stafford, if you are eligible for them. If you are eligible for SEOG, Perkins or WS you may or may not get them as the school’s funding for the 2009-1010 school year may already have been fully used up.

great, all I have are pell and stafford, haha. Thanks a lot, I’ll look for the deadlines somewhere. If anyone else has any info, I’d appreciate that as well.
