Transferring from a community College to UW

So, I'll start off by saying that I know my chances of getting into UW Seattle are slim to none. I would still like to try and I'm curious as to how I could increase my chances of getting in. I've been at Bellevue College for about 2 years now (67 credits) and I will have 82 credits by the end of Fall Quarter. My gpa is at 2.3... I know, I know. I never took school seriously until up to this point and I screwed myself over for that. I never took AP classes or honors back in high school. I've been working since I was 16 and I am 20 now. Volunteered at the hospital/library/boys and girls club before.
Im PROBABLY going to major in Business but I'm not sure yet. I am going to transfer from Bellevue College to UW Bothell since I wont be able to get into UW Seattle. My question is what are the chances of me getting accepted to UW Seattle from Bothell if I work my ass off starting now?

The chances of transferring to UW Seattle from UW Bothell is much slimmer than transferring from a community college. 90% of transfer students admitted to UW Seattle must be from community colleges; only 10% from universities (including UW Bothell). If you plan to major in business, I suggest transferring to UW Bothell and earning your degree there. UW Bothell is an excellent school and you will earn the same diploma that a UW Seattle student earns.

Thank for the reply! Yeah but I want to actually experience a real university (100-300 students in 1 classroom, college with frats and sororities). My parents also would like me to go to UW seattle since they moved here when I was little for this school, and my brother graduated there too.
I can’t transfer from Bellevue to Seattle because my GPA is too low, otherwise I would. So my next option is to transfer from UW Bothell to Seattle after getting my GPA up. The chances would be slim to none then?

Yes. Don’t do that. You would have to have a convincing reason WHY you want to transfer to UW Seattle. Otherwise your chances would be approaching zero (especially with your GPA).
You should also know that for UWS Business School you need at least 2.5 cum. GPA and 2.5 GPA in business courses. Will you get there? And classes at Foster aren’t 100-300. Around 80 at most I think.
Now, there is a difference between UWB and UWS. Maybe the quality of education is the same, but the number of opportunities to build your resume might be different. I don’t know about UWB, but we have A LOT of these at Foster, especially if you are in Accounting.

It’s very difficult to transfer to UW from a four year college. Why not look at another state school like western, central or eastern if you want that experience?

I know its difficult but isn’t Bellevue College considered a “4 year college” now so transferring from here to UW Seattle is the same as UW Bothell > Seattle?

I was thinking about WSU or Western, but that is far from home and my parents would like it better if I was here with them. If I moved, I would have to quit my job and I wouldn’t have access to a car & it would just be a big headache.

In the end, I would still like to go to UW Seattle. I know I’m going to UW Bothell for a fact, but I was wondering how hard it was to transfer with a Business major. I will choose a different major if it means that I would have a higher chance of getting in with something like Bio!

No, Bellevue College, while technically a 4 year college, is still regarded by UW as a community college. I’m sure you’re going to apply to UW Seattle after you graduate from Bellevue anyway (why wouldn’t you, it’s worth a shot), but if you don’t get in, I guess there’s nothing more you can do but attend UW Bothell and keep applying for transfer to Seattle every Fall and Winter quarter until you get in. I would say UW Bothell is a great choice for a Business major.

Sorry to say, but going to UW Seattle at all isn’t looking too great for you. If you look at the academic planning worksheets for both Biology and Business majors, http://admit.washington.edu/apw/BAAPW-2013.pdf</a> and http://admit.washington.edu/apw/BIOLAPW-2013.pdf</a>, you will see that out of many many entering transfer students from community colleges, only very few have GPAs lower than 2.49…in fact only very few have a GPA below 2.71. You may just have to accept that the boat has kind of left on you going to UW Seattle.

^that’s correct. Bellevue has only a handful of four year programs. The majority of students are in the two year programs. UW reserves most of its transfer slots for students in two year programs.

It seems that your desire for a school with fraternities is at odds with your requirement to live and work at home. Something to think about.

You will not get into UW - Seattle with that GPA, no matter where you are trying to transfer from.

Additionally, if you did get into UW - Bothell, you most likely would never be allowed to transfer to Seattle. You have to prove that Bothell doesn’t offer what you need, and even then it’s very difficult. I had a friend who attempted 4 times and FAILED and he even got accepted into the major at UW-Seattle, took the prereqs, the major wasn’t offered at Bothell and had a decent GPA.

I will still try to attempt to get into UW Seattle even though it may seem impossible. Thanks guys!

Oh, one more thing that might help you: you said that you would be willing to take a different major if it would help you get into UW Seattle. Have you looked at UW Seattle’s Evening Degree Program? They don’t offer the same majors as the day program but if you are accepted, you attend the UW Seattle campus and get a UW Seattle degree. It is somewhat less competitive than the day program, and might be a good option for you.

Thanks, I will look into that!

So far, my options are…

Bellevue College > UW Bothell and earning my degree there.
Bellevue College > UW Bothell > UW Seattle (hopefully, if I can bring my GPA up after a couple quarters at Bothell)
Bellevue College > WSU (Depending on if I really want to experience this “College” life with fraternities and sororities, and a bigger classroom feel)

Why don’t you stay at Bellevue and get your GPA up there? You could work on all your prereqs (I’m assuming that because you aren’t sure about your major, you don’t have all the prerequisites for business yet) and then explain in your application how you have worked hard to become a better student and raise your GPA. I myself want to transfer to UW Seattle. I’m currently at Everett Community College and have 90 credits (95 after Fall quarter). I already got accepted into UW Bothell, but would rather go to UW Seattle. I have done a lot of reading on UW Seattle’s website about what they expect from transfer students. They mostly want to see that you have a plan. Before transferring you should have all the prerequisites for your intended major completed. Also, a significant increase in your GPA will show them that you are now serious about school.

My GPA is at 2.3 right now and I don’t even know how long it would take to get it up to a 3.0. I don’t want to spend even more time at BC, I’m kind of sick of that place. I guess I just don’t want to stay at BC trying to get my GPA up and end up not getting in even with a higher GPA. I haven’t taken any AP classes or honors back in high school and I see all these kids that did take them and with a 3.5 GPA so the chances of me getting in are slim.

I hope me being Asian would help lol.

East Asians aren’t considered an underrepresented minority, so it’s a moot point.

And affirmative action by the state is banned in WA anyway…

You should get your Associates Degree from your CC first and then apply to Bothell and Seattle. They are more likely to look past your GPA if you have your AA.
