Transferring from Community College to 4-year University

Hi all. I graduated high school in 2008 and unfortunately didn't get much schooling done in my first year. In my second, I joined a 2-year theater conservatory program at my school and also worked on my GE classes. I hope to have enough credits to transfer by the end of this upcoming year (Spring '11).

What my questions are are as follows:

1.) Exactly what credits are needed for your GE? My school's administration system has NOT been helpful in the slightest at figuring this out.

2.) I'm looking to transfer to a UC. What exactly should I have all had done?

3.) I've heard people transferring from a community college (or maybe just mine) are guaranteed acceptance to UC's. How would I go about checking this?

Thanks a lot everyone. Even just a link to articles that would answer these questions would be extremely helpful. :D

for UC’s you need 60 units that cover your GE. they are covered in IGETC.

for UC’s go to assist.org and fill it out, after that you will know all your major pre-reqs needed. complete IGETC (GE) and ASSIST (major pre-reqs) and you are golden. some majors require you to finish ALL major pre-reqs, usually only the impacted ones do. IE Business, bio, chem, psych, etc

yes some cc’s do have agreements with certain UC’s, not all. the schools that offer it (i dont know which ones do), have the program called TAG, transfer agreement guarantee. if you meet those requirements you are guaranteed admission.

other agreements are TAP, transfer alliance program. you finish this and you get priority admission over other transfer applicants without it.

Thanks! This was extremely helpful. Can I find a list somewhere of UC’s with TAG or TAP agreements?

umm i dont think theres a list online, but the individual CC you go to will have one :)

for the most part TAP is only for UCLA/UCB
TAG is for UCI, UCSD, and other lower div UCs

Thanks so much! You’ve been extremely helpful!

np, dont hesitate to ask more questions :D
