I was wondering if anyone has transferred from a CSU to a UC successfully before. I'm interested in transferring from San Diego State to Berkeley. I am a first year, I have a 4.0, but few extra-curriculars. I'm hoping I still have time to get involved in that way and land a somewhat impressive internship. Any advice?

The transfer rate into Cal is pretty low from 4-year colleges. The state master plan for higher education requires UC schools to give priority to JC transfers. Next in line is inter-campus transfers (UC to UC), and finally all others. You can see it in the stats; in 2005 Cal accepted almost 32% of JC applicants but only about 16% applying from 4-year schools (see UC website at http://tinyurl.com/yrpggv)

If a Cal degree is a strong goal of yours then you would double your chances by spending next year at a JC. I know it can be hard to walk away from a 4-year school to go to a JC, but it will strongly improve your chances. Furthermore JC's have a program that can guarantee admission to UC campuses except for Cal and UCLA. So if you know you don't want a SDSU degree this would guarantee you'd get a UC degree, and give you the best chance for it being from Cal.

Also take a look on the Cal website for xfer student selection criteria so you can be sure you're spending your effort in the best places.

What is your major?
