I was accepted to Northwestern’s Class of 2019 through the Medill School of Journalism. While I’m ecstatic about this opportunity, I’m also a bit worried that journalism won’t end up being the right major for me. If this happens, how easy would it be to transfer from Medill to Weinberg?
I had difficulty transferring, but I think that was bureaucratic error. It took me 2 tries
It takes a quarter to go through. They ensure you have 3 grades above a C and that is the only requirement. (you also need Medill dean’s approval and meet with your Medill adviser, but that’s very easy – they don’t care, and they just want to make sure everything is gravy)
When you should transfer depends on your level of interest. And some things to keep in mind: there is a writing requirement that I THINK (not sure) the Weinberg freshman seminars fulfill. From what I was told, if you submit examples of papers in classes, you can be exempt from this requirement, but if not, taking a seminar might be easier. Medill has the same distros as Weinberg, so I there shouldn’t be any issues transferring those over.
If you transfer to Weinberg at any point during freshman year, you will need to take at least 1 freshman seminar (so, depends on if you are interested in taking those or not. You can take those even while in Medill, though you won’t have 1st choice).
Transferring into Medill is more complicated than vice versa, so if you’re still interested in journalism, you should stay.
If not, I think you can transfer into Weinberg by July or August if you want to start off in Weinberg immediately
