Transferring from RPI, advice?

Hey guys, first time posting here at cc so I'll try to fill in as much info as I can. As you can tell from above^^, I am currently a freshman at RPI. I went into RPI majoring in engineering, but originally before applying to any college, I was stuck between business and engineering.

My first semester was ok, social life was quiet, made a few friends, and it seemed like there was little to do here besides drinking, parties, etc. Classes were good except I had little or no motivation to do well. My gpa is about a 2.25 with an F in one of my classes and B's for the others. I know better to concentrate more in my second semester and I would like to take the class I failed in the summer again.

After a couple of months into RPI, I decided that engineering wasn't the right major for me and I started looking at business colleges. However, I hadn't taken classes that were engineering based but I would in my second semester. I believed although I was going to take them, I would transfer regardless.

My reasons for transferring is because my parents are shelling out about 10k per semester for me to come here. It's not fair that I am doing not as well as I should do and make them pay for something I'm not using to its full potential. Financial aid was a big decision in where I would go to. The money spent here might be better use at some other college where it is cheaper. Also, I wasn't sure if RPI's business department was as good I guess as other colleges.

I'm torn in what I should do after my first year of college at RPI. Should I continue with RPI or should I leave?
My choices were:
BU
UCONN
Babson
Bentley
NU

Thanks a lot.

Can anybody offer any insight? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Go back home, attend your local cc and work out a plan agreeable to you and your parents. You’re unhappy and are killing your gpa.

you should absolutely transfer if you are unhappy – but i don’t think you should go home to your local cc. apply to all the schools on your list (assuming you still would like to attend that school over RPI) and let them know you made a mistake by not applying/attending last year.

if you want to get into a business school, you need to make it clear to them that the only reason you got bad grades is because you weren’t studying your passion. they might see your F and low gpa as a sign that you were not motivated to try at RPI. this may be true, but make it clear that you will be motivated at their school. also, be prepared for none of your credits to transfer.

college is supposed to be the best time of your life-- be happy. even if it takes an extra year to finish, its well worth it.

good luck.

Most of the schools on your list are going to cost way more than 10k a year, especially BU and NU (I’m assuming Northeastern?). If you are instate for UCONN, transfer there. If not, and if cost really is an issue, it looks like you have no choice but community college.
