Hi guys im currently interested in transferring from Santa Monica College in Los Angeles California to Florida State University as a sophomore for the fall 2014 term.

In order apply as a sophomore I need to meet freshman requirements:

I got a 2.7 gpa in highschool so thats above the 2.0 freshman requirement

I attended a Florida middle school and high school where I acquired the 2 years+ of foreign language so I am good on that freshman requirement.

What I am concerned about are my ACT and SAT math scores. They don’t meet the freshman requirement but the FSU website says I can meet that requirement through 2 years of college math. I will have completed Math 84(pre algebra) and Math 18 or 20(elementary algebra) by the end of summer 2014 which are both pre-college level math courses in California. I am not sure if these are considered college level in Florida and would count towards the freshman requirement.

Current GPA 3.0
plans to raise by the end of summer

Major:Communications

Fall 2013 classes/grades:

English 1- B
Art history 72- A
Sociology 1- C
Media 10- A
Geography 1- B

Courses Im taking during spring 2014:

Music 32
English 2
Math 84
Communication studies 35
Philosophy 1

Courses planning to take during summer:

Math 18 or 20
Speech 1

So that would be 30 units not counting the 2 math courses which are considered “no credit” in California.

I would love any tips, advice,or clarification!

Are you sure you are ready for the humidity?
Just kidding. I am a California native and have somehow managed to survive the humidity here in Florida for several years now, so I am sure you will get used to it.

That said, I wonder if you are looking at the right information for transferring as a sophomore to FSU? According to FSU’s website, you need to meet the freshman admission requirements, and I have a Florida senior so we are very familiar with the requirements, and they are much stricter than what you described above.

If you choose to apply as a sophomore transfer, you are going to be competing with Florida students who have been building their GPA records since junior high, taking high school level classes, graduating with at least 4 years/credits in math (Algebra 1 and above, and many students here start Algebra 1 in the 7th grade - my son will graduate this year with 6 years/units of math from Alg 1 to AP Stats.)

Take a look at the freshman admission requirements, which sophomore transfers are expected to meet:

<a href=“FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found”>http://admissions.fsu.edu/freshman/admissions/requirements.cfm

I think you may want to go ahead and complete your AA at Santa Monica College so you can transfer to FSU as a junior and solidify that 3.0+ GPA, and make sure your AA includes classes similar to what Florida students transferring from a Florida community college are expected to have completed.

I have included a link to Tallahassee Community College, which feeds into FSU, and on the page, you can click academic maps of many majors and see what courses compose a Florida AA and which FSU expects to see, so that you can make sure you are competitive.

Best of luck. I hope you can make your dream of transferring to FSU happen!

^^^ Great advise! :-bd

And it will save you some $$$ (about $98 per credit hour vs. $212 at FSU, or about $3,000 a year).

Good Luck!
