Transferring from the College of Business to Engineering?

So I was accepted to the College of Business but I am actually pretty undecided. I really have no idea what I see myself going into. I am not particularly strong in science, have not taken calculus, and do not have any obvious interests. I applied to business because I suppose it is something that generally appeals to me - although I have not taken any business classes in high school - but I mainly applied because I figured it would be much easier to try and get in as a freshman rather than transfer in. So I am very happy I was accepted.

That being said, I am worried I may become interested in engineering or another field. And I have a bad feeling that if I do indeed migrate towards engineering, that it would be very difficult for me to transfer into the College of Engineering at Illinois? Am I correct? Does a business to engineering transfer have an easier time than a DGS to engineering transfer?

And would engineering be my only concern? If I somehow happen to find an interest in humanities or science, can I easily transfer into those fields?

Anyone have general thoughts? I am not 100% sure I am going to Illinois. I am very undecided and am not sure how much flexibility I would have at Illinois.

I imagine that in general people transferring from Business to Engineering have an easier time that DGS to engineering because the College of Business has high standards in terms of who they admit to their programs… If you made it into Business, you’re probably a competent student.

The lack of skill in science and the calculus problem will hurt you though. If engineering interests you, definitely take a Calculus I class at a community college or online over the summer. When transferring into Engineering, the classes that your grades will be looked at the most closely are those that fall under the engineering majors… Typically classes like calculus, physics, and chemistry.

Otherwise, unless you fall in love with an especially selective program at the school, it should be easy to transfer elsewhere. LAS has plenty of openings.

Good luck with your decision.

There are no transfers from one college at UIUC to another until after first year into second and you can make the attempt after first year or second year and for some majors after first semester second year. Easiest transfer is into the Arts and Sciences college for most majors in that college, although some majors can be difficult because of high popularity of the particular major (e.g., psychology) or because of higher than usual minimum GPA needed. Transfering from business to engineering is possible but there are currently impacted majors (those with too many students in them) that right now are very difficult to transfer into (mechanical and aerospace and to some degree civil eng and computer science; for example, your college GPA at time of applying for transfer needs to be 3.8 right now to even be considered for mechanical and aerospace). Moreover, a difficult task as a freshman business major is meeting the course requirements to transfer into engineering and getting needed grades. You have to complete certain course work in calculus, chemistry and physics, and get As and at worst Bs in those courses, to be allowed to transfer, and a freshman business student usually does not take any of the ones required so you have to discuss with your college counselor what you intend to do to assure you can do it.
