I was waitlisted at Rice and then rejected eventually in July 2008. I was really disappointed but then I looked on Rice's transfer site and it said that transfer students need only 9 hours of credit prior to entering rice. Does this mean I am eligible to transfer after a semester at UT Dallas (where I am entering this fall as a freshman). I'll be taking 16 hours there so yea...can I??

and if I get in from this how would housing work??

You can but i heard its difficult to transfer into Rice (Doesn’t mean you can’t try!). I would go ahead and give it a shot. Housing remains the same and you will be provided with your own accomadations in one of the residential colleges. By the way, Did you happen to apply as a freshman for Fall of 2008? If so what were your stats and did you do RD or ED?

yes i applied for as a freshman in fall of 2008 and got waitlisted with below stats:

ACT: 32
SAT II’s: Math 1 770, Math 2 780, Biology 640ish

ECs
4 years varsity tennis
table tennis club president
National HOnor society
UIL Math and Science Competitions

Class rank: 7/1200 students
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.5ish weighted

Although you can transfer mid-year, it might just be easier to start next fall instead. You’ll then have more time to find housing, if you’re going to live off-campus (I’m not certain, but you may not get on-campus if you come in fall, let alone january). Also, you’ll then get O-week, which is a spectacular intoduction to the university and its culture.

I was a transfer student this past year. Transferring to Rice statistically is more difficult then applying as a high school senior. While you can apply after 9 credit hours, I would doubt that you would have much of a chance.

What I would suggest is if you know or have a general idea of what you want to major in, then first list those intro courses that you would have to take. Contact Rice and find out if those courses at your present college would be considered as equivalent or TRAN credits. You want equivalent credits for your intended major. TRAN credits more or less count towards the total graduation credits only. Equivalent credits are just that. For example if you take Intro Bio at your present college and Rice gives you equivalent credit, then your transcript will show Intro Bio, and if you are a bio major then it counts toward your major. On the other hand if the intro bio course was not given equivalent credits but was given TRAN credit, then it shows up on your transcript as TRAN, so if you were a bio major you would have to retake intro bio at Rice. That is why it is important to know what will tansfer as equivalent vs TRAN. From my perspective I would not take any course that did not have a matching course at Rice to be safe.
The next thing you should do is take a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester to show you can handle a regular course load. You should not overload.
Finally, you should show involvement in extra curriculars. That can be either community or on campus programs, clubs, activities.
One last note is that i would not apply after 1 semester. I would complete at least one year first (two semesters). Also, I don’t know if you could apply anyway as your application would have to be in prior to completing your first semester. So, admissions would have nothing to review regarding college work. Applying in the spring for Fall admittance means that your 1st semester grades would be out and you would most likely have completed mid-term exams so you could give a strong indication of what your final grades for spring semester will be.
Good Luck.

thanks a lot for your input guys. my courseload for this semester is :

calculus based physics
general chemistry
calculus II
intro to drama

so i think at least 3 of those courses should transfer…

^So im guessing when you applied freshman year, the thing that might have lowered your chances were your EC’s?
