Transferring out of NYU!

Hey,

So I am a freshman at NYU, I really just want to get out. I came here because it was the best school I got into, I got into Villanova and northeastern as well, but I chose NYU for obvious reasons. I was wondering if someone could help me evaluate my chances as transferring up, I was hoping to maybe Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, notre dame, princeton, because I do has a kind of unusual app.
P.S. I do have contacts at all these schools if that helps, mostly just strong alumni, small donors

I go to Gallatin at NYU, which is the school for individualized study, so basically you take any classes you want at any school at nyu, and name your own major, kind of cool. My major is 'The Business of Social Media and E-commerce' with a minor in Poly-sci. At NYU, I just finished my first semester with a 3.5 about. It isn't amazing but being a freshman and just getting adjusted to the school made it hard, I will most likely be up to 3.7 next semester, God be with me.

The unique part of my app is that I had a very success website I created when I was in 7th grade that I still run today and earns me enough money to pay for college. The site has received over 70 million hits and has almost 150,000 daily followers. Not bad I think. I have used my website to gain sponsors from every company from Dove Soap, to the new James Bond movie. I also use my website to promote my charity to build a school for the illiterate in the slums of Kenya. It is a good cause and I love to do it!

I wrote my college essay when I was in high school on being sued by Warner Music Group for copyright, and defending myself as a 16 year old against this billion dollar company, knowing nothing about the law. And I came out on top. It didn't end up going to court, but I presented my case to their lawyers and after 3 months of hard research I found a way to argue fair use, and Warner accepted it. NYU found interest in this I guess, but I don't know if I should reuse it.

Anyway, here is my High School grades, not that great. NYU mainly accepted me I think because of my website, and my GPA went down a lot due some large family problem I had my senior year. Something I still deal with, which is my Father who was diagnosed with ALS my senior years, a terminal illness. He really wants me to do well, which is why I write this to hopefully leave NYU.

HighSchool

GPA: 3.55
AP's: Ap Lang, APUSH, AP Euro, AP Gov

Honors: Honors Chinese 3, Honors Chinese 4 (Im white, irish), Honors Humanities

Extra: 4 years of varsity track, 3 seasons per year so all year. A lot of volunteer work, both for my church and separate from my church. website.

SAT: 1900

NYU

GPA: 3.5

Extra: Grown my site to 70 million hits, and used my influence to help raise money to build a a school in the slums on Kenya.

Let me know what you guys think! Thanks so much!

You ever go out there to make sure that’s what was done w the money? Kenya ranks near the bottom of the list on Transparency International corruption index (139 out of 189 countries)

I myself have not had the time to go down, but they welcome you to do so, and update me with pictures and videos of the students from the school. It is a well operated charity.

Princeton doesn’t accept transfer students, so that’s out.

Harvard takes like 15 per year which is like 1% of all applicants who apply, and your grades just aren’t good enough to get you a slot there.

Stanford took 58 students out of 1,400 who applied. (4%) Again, your grades are not high enough to make you a competitive applicant. Most students will have perfect or near perfect grades throughout HS and college.

Columbia took 149 students out of 2,600 who applied (5%). While you have a better chance at Columbia than Stanford or Harvard, it’s highly unlikely - if you couldn’t have gotten into Columbia as a high school senior, there’s almost no possibility of you getting in as a transfer student.

Remember, transfer admissions are almost always much more competitive than freshmen admissions. Your 3.5 first term GPA just isn’t good enough to make into the above schools, your low SAT and low HS GPA make it all much worse for these schools.

Notre Dame you may have a chance at, but I would recommend looking at other universities - if you need FA it’s going to be hard for you to get good FA, as transfer students generally don’t get good aid.

I would recommend looking at Emory (very good FA), Gtown, USC, UVa, Michigan as your top choices for transfer. Anything above these universities is highly unlikely due to very competitive admissions.

So why are you wanting to transfer?

I second what thaiboxer asked.

And I am interested in the fact that you have all those honors Chinese. Im white and I really am interested in learning Chinese- did you take those classes at NYU? And if you did, how were they?

Yeah you never told us why you want to leave. And I think your website can compensate a lot for your grades, Ivies don’t only look at grades, they want special people.

Cornell takes a fair amount of transfers, a much larger percentage than the other ivys.

Ok wait then I have another question. You’re a freshmen? You’ve only been there for less than a semester- did you even give nyu a chance? Or did you just want to get a bachelors somewhere more prestigious?

@thawowtso I took the chinese classes in high school. A great experience and i highly recommend it, not that hard. I took chinese 1, 2, 3 honors, 4 honors. Very fun, I will hopefully continue that soon here, or wherever i transfer.

@Gaigee Do you think my website and other things like my help with the charity, would help enough that I would have a competitive app at, Columbia for example?

@ every one else who asked why. I don’t secretly despise NYU, I just am not a city college type kind of guy. I need a campus, sports, a community, FRIENDS! haha NYU is a very individualized school, I’m looking for a little more. I am athletic and can run a 4:45 mile, I pride myself on my athleticism, but NYU just doesn’t really have a large community to support that. I am not just looking to go somewhere more prestigious, I just looking to go somewhere we I can achieve those things like a community, school spirit. BUT nyu is a great school and I am very grateful I got in, academically, it fits me very well. (Gallatin students can take and NYU class at nyu school they want) So if I am going to leave, I want to go to a school that will match the academic benefits of nyu to me. And since nyu works well with me, it seems only worth it to transfer for the community if I transfer to those other schools like Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, or Stanford. The big tech, silicon valley kind of schools

USC seems like a great school you would enjoy. Very social, top notch and really friendly people. I am a student at USC and obviously we are big on athletics and it is seriously hard not to make friends. And I think you would have a strong chance of getting in. Just get that GPA higher (average is about 3.7) but that website thing is a great advantage.

Try applying!! Deadline for transfers is feb. 1st!! :)

I think I am really just hoping for Columbia, maybe Harvard or Stanford. The reason being they have a large E-Commerce/ social media department they are building up, so I tihnk that might entice them. Should I apply or is it a waste of time, considering everything from my grades, to my website, what are may chances? be honest, I can take it hahah. Thanks

Well, I honestly thing your college GPA is a little low for an IVY or Stanford transfer. Their MINIMUM gpa requirements is 3.5 (at least for columbia). And I think we all know IVYs are beyond competitive so I sort of doubt they are accepting canidates below a 3.7-3.8. Your SATs look average, for an IVY transfer profile, but possibly its decent for admissions since you have some college credits under your belt. If you are trying to go to Columbia, any of the schools you listed really, that gpa HAS to go up in order to be competitive. I don’t see you getting in with a gpa that low, website or not.

Still, USC could be a back up if you are desperate to leave NYU. They have a great social media department in their Annenberg school.

Possibly USC. What about Duke though? Do I have a chance for transfer?

If you’re looking for school pride and a sense of community at NYU, please check out Greek life. Over 10% of NYU students are involved with Greek life as of March 2011. There’s no harm in giving it a try and going out for recruitment, and if you don’t like it, you can always drop out, no pressure. The only way to know if Greek life is for you is to try it yourself! :)

If you decide to leave NYU anyway, best of luck to you in your transfer process and I hope you find what you’re looking for in your college experience!

If I got rejected from NYU for the Spring 2013 term and I reapply for the Fall 2013 term?
All I need is a yes or a no. Will the school let me do this because I know it varies from school to school.
Thanks
