Hello!
I've applied to UMN as a transfer student (I'm a second year now) and I've begun to come across some issues with transferring psychology courses. I'm a psychology major, and one of my main reasons for trying to transfer to UMN is because of the great psych department. I've been going along with the recommended courses/curriculum for psychology majors at my current school, which means I've been taking a few psych classes every semester. However, today their psych department told me that it's difficult to transfer psychology courses into their system, and that they usually recommend prospective transfer students fulfill other general education requirements instead.

So my question is, are there any stories on here of people who have/haven't had luck with this sort of thing? They're my first choice school and I'm becoming worried that they won't accept any of the classes I've taken for my major.

Can you contact someone in the Psych department or the advising office to get a more definitive answer? Many colleges want you to take your “major” courses (or x percent of them) from them since it is their name on the diploma.

I sent them the syllabi etc. for an evaluation for credit, but I’m just wondering about whether this issue has come up for other people on here since psychology is a pretty popular major.

I’m a senior at the U, studying Psychology as well. I was a transfer student myself two years ago, but I didn’t have any psych-related credits to transfer.

Anyways, the U’s Psychology program is extremely research-oriented and research-specialized. The program’s mission is to make sure that as graduates, we’re completely and utterly comfortable with research design/inferential stats/facilitation of studies/analysis/APA style reporting/etc. Way more to than any other undergraduate Psychology program.

Because of this, transfer credit isn’t as easily acceptable.

The three foundations courses for Psychology majors are PSY 1001 (Intro Psych) ; which any introductory Psychology course at any school should easily transfer for, PSY 3801 (Intro. to Psychological Measurement and Data Analysis) ; which is the tough “weed-out” course for psychology majors; I had taken a merely identical course at my first university, and I didn’t get transfer credit for it forcing me to take 3801 at the U; and lastly is PSY 3001W “Intro to Research Methods” which is both Writing Intensive (hereby required) and completely sums up the research knowledge learned in past courses as well as requires undergrads to do actual research.

As you progress further in the program, other electives and required courses have PSY 3801 and PSY 3001W as prerequisites. So, any similar course taken wouldn’t transfer as the course at the U is likely significantly more research-based.
