Transferring to Clemson, UNC, UMD

I came from up north and currently go to USC. I have been here 2 years but I am unhappy here and not enjoying my time here and i am looking to transfer. I am planning on visiting Clemson because it seems like it is a good school and everyone who goes there seems to love it. I am also looking at UNC and UMD. I have been doing research but since im down here in SC i plan on visiting Clemson first and very soon. Is Clemson what everyone says it is? I am excited to visit. my GPA is a 3.5 right now and i checked out the credits transfer page they have on their website and about a little more than half will transfer.

Sorry to hear that you’ve not had the experience you hope for and wishing you well in your transfer search. Good job on your academics to date!

As far as Clemson, it depends what you’ve heard people say it is! What our DS, OOS (northerner) sophomore, has found is a beautiful campus bordering a large lake and surrounded by forest and mountains with a warm, supportive community, stimulating academics and abundant opportunities to pursue outside the classroom academic, sports and hobby interests. While the town of Clemson is “small”, Greenville (about 40 mins away) is a decent size city with many restaurants and arts offerings. Our DS has adored Clemson since he first set foot there and has never questioned his decision to attend. There are actually a good number of students from the mid-Atlantic states who attend Clemson (not sure how far “north” you’re from.)

Have to say that I love that Clemson’s Pres. Clements is very engaged with the university community and students. We often see “selfies” of students with him at various events, including football games. I think it makes a big difference to have a president who clearly places a priority on interacting with the students.

As far as post college, the Clemson community seems to be one of those that “once a member, always a member” – and anyone who sees a Clemson shirt anywhere else in the nation or world wants to connect to hear about the other person’s Clemson connection and experience. The alumni network is reported to be one of the top groups among U.S. universities.

You might ask each of the schools what support they offer transfer students to help connect in the new setting. Also, many Clemson students move off campus by junior year, so you might ask for those juniors who remain on campus, which dorms/apartments they would typically select. And I would definitely look at the list of Clemson’s activities to ensure there were a good number you might like to join to help ensure you have some natural integration points.

You will find that both UMD and UNC are more suburban in setting. UMD is located a subway ride away from DC. All are great schools, so will somewhat depend on the setting and culture of each. Best of luck!

Just to speak to credit transfer, I was accepted to transfer for Spring 2016 as a junior and I was surprised how many of my credits transferred. Of the 80 I took at my current school, 69 transferred. It was surprising because I was an engineering major previously and I am switching to communications. Good luck making a decision!
