I was not accepted to Michigan applying out of high school, so I'm going to UM-Dearborn in the fall with the hopes of transferring to the Ann Arbor campus my junior year. My question is if you have around 60 credits, does UM look at your high school grades/test scores anymore? My high school stats were not stellar, and I'm concerned that they will be holding me back when I apply to transfer.

Also, will it be a lot harder to transfer to Michigan in the near future? I'm wondering if the huge number of applicants in recent years and the plummeting acceptance rate will mean that more people like me who were rejected as high school students will try to transfer to Michigan in the next few years?

I also got rejected from Michigan as a high school student (3.4 GPA, 34 ACT), and ended up going to UMD for 3 semesters before transferring in January of 2011. I tried transferring twice. The first time i applied for Fall 2010 and was rejected, because although my college grades were good, they give preference transferring to those with junior status. The second time I applied, I was accepted. If you’re going in as a Junior, I believe they place far more emphasis on your college grades than your high school ones. Make sure you maintain a strong GPA at Dearborn to show that you’ve improved substantially since high school, and you should be ok.

If you are applying as a junior, high school grades will not even be considered. I believe that as long as you have 55+ credits, they won’t matter. Just make sure to focus on your GPA and make sure you have about 60 credits by the time you become a junior because those are the only things the admissions office really cares about for transfers. Also, I doubt that transfer admissions will be affected by the new developments in freshmen admissions because it probably won’t change the number that leave the university of whatever reasons and as long as they leave, there will be room for transfers.
