I'm majoring in Petroleum Engineering at Penn State University and I have 1.5 year left to graduate. Would it be a better option for me to transfer to TAMU where opportunities are greater? Plus, I think the tuition of both schools are about the same.

Is your GPA pretty high? Are the upper level courses similar?

do the transfer and if you don’t like the Petroleum Engineering department at Texas A&M, you can always major in Poulty Science, which ranks #1 in the country.

[About the Department](Texas A&M AgriLife)

I’m sure you’ll like the number one undergrad department though for petroleum engineering.

With 1.5 years to go - do a LOT of homework. You need to know how many of your courses will transfer, what you will lose, what you will need to make up.

I don’t know about PetEngr, but I know both schools are recruited for geoscience positions.

What kind of “opportunities” are you looking for? Summer internships would probably be easier thru TAMU just from a logistical standpoint, but job recruitment opportunities should be similar. I know at lot of Penn State engineers with oil companies.

My GPA is 3.13 and yes most of the upper level courses are the same since they both are accredited. My main concern is definitely summer internship availabilities. I believe that if you graduate without any internship experience, then you are pretty much screwed. Hence, I’m trying to enhance my opportunity as much as possible. I have 80 credits and both schools I believe required 129 credits to graduate.

I know in order to graduate, you need at least 60 credits of that school no? At this point, it is quite a tough call for me.

If I was in your position I’d probably stay but you gotta do what you think is best and right.

Don’t assume that just because both programs are accredited that all their lower/upper level courses are the same. Schools need to cover specific curricular topics to be accredited, they don’t have to offer them all the same way. Some do, many don’t.

Have you checked into internship opportunities at Penn State?

Have you applied for the transfer and been accepted and are just now trying to make a decision? There are a limited number of spots for upper level and usually they are filled by the freshman or first/second year transfers. There may not be any room in third/fourth year level courses.

What about finishing at Penn State and doing a grad program at Texas A&M?

^^^
Montegut - that was also what I was thinking.

best comment on this board, unless the Texas A&M graduate program in Petroleum Engineering is much tougher to get into than transferring to the undergraduate school.

I’m too old to be in grad school haha. I have over 5 on-campus interviews with major and independent companies but didn’t get any so far. Only one person I know got it but the rest are in same boat as I am. Hence, I think TAMU may have a better chance of landing an internship.

I’ll be contacting TAMU after spring break and see how it goes. So far, I checked with both core classes, they all seem to match.
