In high school I will have:
4.5 gpa
SAT score of 1890.
I am involved in about three-four clubs and have many hours (100+) of community service.
I was waitlised from Chapel Hill (as in in-state student), which I don’t find extremely unbelievable considering how hard it is to get into.
Going into NCSU I will have a 3.8 GPA or higher
If I am very involved at NCSU and maintain a 3.8 GPA, will I likely be accepted as a sophomore transfer at UNC?
I think it isn’t impossible to transfer to unc, but it is hard to tell what anyone’s chances are as a transfer student. Certainly keeping your grades up can help.
However, why UNC? What do you wish to study there? Because UNC is such a “superstar” in NC, the other colleges tend to be overshadowed. However, NCSU is an excellent school. Right now, with all the seniors talking about college, it can feel disappointing to not get your first choice. Yet, starting college with the idea that you won’t be staying there can impact your experience there.
No harm in applying to transfer, but also make the most of what NCSU has to offer. You might like it there.
Thanks for your advice and for caring about my experience! It means a lot! But, well, I intend on majoring in biology, so UNC makes more sense; especially providing NCSU is mostly an engineering/veterinary school. I want to go to UNC mostly because I enjoy the campus/setting much more, and I have many close friends going there. Maybe I will like NCSU, but at the moment I feel out of place there and would feel more redeemed if I could organize an effective plan to transfer
I think you can do two plans at once. You can apply to transfer. However, to transfer , of course you will get the best grades you can and work hard. This will benefit you no matter where you end up.
Starting college with the intent to transfer can sabotage your college experience though. Emotionally, you may not want to invest in friendships and getting to know what opportunities there are in your major if you think you are leaving anyway.
UNC is an awesome school, but so is NCSU. It is just hard to be the great school down the road from the superstar. I think right now, you may feel as if you were left out of going to UNC, but you ended up in a good place. Both colleges are strong in biology.
NSCU has a number of biology majors :

UNC allows you to specialize within the major.
Certainly, there is no reason to choose between the two at the moment. You can apply to transfer. Take whatever general ed classes you need for both schools : English, etc. However, in the meantime, invest yourself in what NCSU has to offer. You might find you like it.
