I'm presently a freshman at the University of Kentucky in Electrical Engineering (which I will remain in). I did very poorly in highschool, didn't like any of the schools I could have gained admission to in Virginia (of which I'm a resident), and decided to come out here. For various reasons, I'm turning back.

Midterms have just passed here. I was doing quite well for a while, keeping up with homework (a huge problem for me in HS), getting the highest scores on exams for my section, having a good time. I faultered for a few weeks, and the situation has become a bit strained. As it is, I think I can realistically get somewhere between a 3.0-3.5 GPA this first semester (which, I'm told, is really the deciding factor for transfer admissions). Naturally, I intend to get a 3.5 (which would require being a model student for the remaining seven weeks of the semester). Hope springs eternal.

What is a sufficient GPA to be admitted to the University of Virginia? How about Virginia Tech? I've heard EC's are unimportant. I started the Linux Users Group here, I'm a DJ at the student radio station, I'm involved in the solar car team (I have a small project I work on alone), and I Fence (it's a club sport). Is my highschool record going to be examined beyond a simple check of basic prerequisites? This would deter me from applying at all.
