How difficult is it to get in as a transfer OOS to IU?? I'll have about 25 credits

I just transferred here with about 60 credits (crazy I know, my old school just really sucked). I had good grades and I’m from Indiana though. The hardest part is getting through all the paper work and transferring your transcripts, that kind of thing. LMK if you have any specific questions, and I’ll try my best to answer them.

Speaking as a transfer student: unless you know people already, DONT TRANSFER HERE. The kids @ IU are disinterested in making new friends and meeting new people. They have their groups already and it’s nearly impossible to break into those groups. And I know I’m not the only one because I’ve met at least five other students who said the same thing and transferred to new schools.

As long as you don’t care about social life I guess, but IU students are not especially friendly. Many of them are closed off. Especially social people are in sororities/frats. If you aren’t in either, it makes it that much harder to meet people and make friends.

I’m also a transfer student and I have to say that my experience is much different than caschmid’s. I’ve made a bunch of new friends! I’m living in the dorms, which I would definitely recommend. There are a lot of freshmen, but I also have friends who are juniors and seniors. I’ve found everyone that I’ve encountered to be very friendly.

Thank you everyone for you insight! I actually am in a Panhellenic sorority so hopefully that’ll help. I planned on renting an apartment if I get in for spring for 6 months and then hopefully living in the house if they have room!

Jeez caschmid, have you ever stopped to think that maybe the problem isn’t with the 40,000 or so students here, but rather with you (and those five other students you mentioned)? Let’s think about the least common denominator here…

It does depend on where you live I guess. I’ve heard some of the dorms here are kind of known as unfriendly or “shut-in,” but I’m a transfer student and live in Collins LLC and the people here are SO friendly and approachable. There are other transfer students here in Collins who certainly show no shortage of friends.

I’m not gonna lie, it is a bit hard coming in as a transfer student because there are already a lot of pre-established groups of friends, and because you’re not a freshman, you don’t neatly fall into the little cliques that form freshman year. But that’s how it’s going to be at any big college, not just IU. You just have to try twice as hard, get involved on campus, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. If you’re just gonna whine that no one at the school is friendly, no good will come out of it…

Curls, I got your PM and will do my best to fully answer it when I have the time!
