Transferring

Do you guys think I have a chance of
transferring into Binghamton or Geneseo. I am a freshman at the University of Maryland,
College Park as a computer science major. What do you think my chances are. I am also a
Nys resident

Are we supposed to guess whether you’re a good student or not?

Why are you leaving UM-CP??

I am thinking about leaving because overall I am not happy here, and it would put a lot of financial stress off my parents.
25 act, 1250 2-part SAT, and 3.8/4.0 GPA
I played soccer throughout high school, took rigorous courses such as ap calculus bc, ap chem, and others I am part of a few clubs and my schools national honor society. I also volunteer and help little kids learn how to play soccer.
@mom2collegekids

I am also a member of habitat for humanity, and the trail club at my school.

Did you apply to either of those places last year? Were you admitted? If so, pick up the phone and call the admissions office and ask what you would need to do to be able to start there second semester.

@happymomof1 I applied to Binghamton and got waitlisted will that hurt my chances, but I did not apply to Geneseo

It will with only a semester gone when you apply again.

Apply to Geneseo, you may have a shot if your first semester GPA is okay. I assume you’re a NYS resident.
Why did you choose UMD-CP and why do you want to transfer now?
Does it seem it’s not worth the cost?
What’s your parents’ budget?

Im just overall not happy here and I would like to apply for the fall semester of 2016, will it still hurt my chances @Erin’s Dad @MYOS1634

Can you define what makes you unhappy? Size, environment, classes, requirements, dorm/learning community, location, importance of sports or lack thereof, weather, food, peers (in wha what/why), dress code, clubs or lack thereof, volunteering opportunities, etc.
Most important for you to ensure your transfer is to keep up your grades. Make sure you go to class, make sure you go to office hours, get a tutor if need be.
Are you a NYS resident and what’s your budget?

Money is not the issue,and i am a nys resident. I just feel like im alone here and I try and meet a lot of people and become friends but none of them ever want to hangout with me, im usually by myself. I have friends at binghamton and geneseo and i know overall i would be much happier there, i just feel alone here. and i do have guilt of my parents paying for all of my college because of me they loose a big chunk of their lives. Im just afraid since i got waitlisted at binghamton that i wont get in when i apply for the fall semester of 2016 that i wont get in, and i really want to be at binghamton.

@MYOS1634

Being lonely is tough. Aren’t there socials in your residence hall? Even if it “sounds” lame, it’s usually fun and a good way to meet people.
Join clubs - surely there are some at least for each day of the week :slight_smile:
Are you in large classes or small classes? How many are discussion-based?
Can you organize a study group if a class has no review session?
Make sure to keep your GPA up because that’ll help you get into Binghamton/Geneseo.

@nytigers11 Hang in there for at least a whole year. Go ahead and send in transfer applications for Fall 2016 but I would strongly advise you to not send in transfer applications for Spring 2016. I was in the same place as you - look at my threads for IU vs IUPUI. I was lonely and lost. I didn’t like how I was always alone and no matter how hard I tried to find people to talk to, they would just never come and hang out. If it is financial, then I would urge you to reconsider why you picked the college you are at right now. And remember, college is an investment that eventually pays itself back not just monetary-wise but by the skills and aptitudes you gain. Don’t hang on the money issue as a reason to transfer. Things do get better. PM me if you need anything.

If you were waitlisted at Binghamton, that means you were good enough to be admitted, but they ran out of space. So it is actually a good thing for you to know! Keep working hard in your classes this year so that you can have the best grades possible, and you will have a good chance at being admitted as a transfer.

Thank you all for the help and support, I really needed this and appreciate it. I will work my hardest and make sure my grades are good.

Well don’t give up on your social life! Get involved in activities. For many people, going away is a chance to redefine themselves or define themselves for the first time because they have the opportunity to meet a new set of people from all over. But those who attend their own state school are often trading that in for what they feel is more comfortable, essentially replicating their high school social circle because they are attending a college with a bunch of people from their high school. I’m all for maintaining high school relationships but I think attending a college with them is a shame. it is a great time for branching out beyond your comfort zone-something you have done and I applaud that. My impression is that those who cling to their high school friends at the start of college branch out more once they are comfortable with college. So, you may find people become more open as they year progresses. Keep open to liking it there! It could happen.
