Transfers can't do Honors Program?

Okay, so I plan to transfer to UF in Fall. I applied as a Nutritional Science major (may switch to Microbiology and Cell Science with a minor in Nutrition since they have the same pre-reqs) and I was REALLY interested in trying to do honors. It would look great for dental school and I plan to be involved in a research project anyway.

Unfortunately, I just read on the general UF honor's page that transfer students don't qualify! I plan to call the school this week, but I figured I would start here. Is there any program similar? Can I still at least graduate with sum laude, magna or summa cum laude as a transfer? This is just really upsetting because I got SO excited about aiming for honors.

Yes, you can graduate with honors, the GPA requirements vary based on major:

<a href=“Office of the University Registrar”>http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/catalog1011/programs/honorsgpa.html</a></p>

Many of the “advantages” of the “honors program” (vs. honors at graduation, which is only based on GPA/major), don’t apply to Juniors/Seniors, such as picking classes early. Also, many of the honor classes (like honors Calc 1 or honors English) are targeted at first or second year students. The honors program is also based on earning 14 “honor points” (and earning “honors” at graduation, via GPA), something you don’t want to try and stuff into your last two years.

And to be honest, I think any honors program is a recruitment tool for high stat freshmen, and as a way to get them “engaged” in the first year or two of college. It’s for those freshmen who want to do “extra stuff”, while a junior is really focused on taking courses in their major.

Many of the activities associated with the honors program is open to any student, including the honor classes, volunteer work, joining clubs, doing research, etc. In your case, you likely want to join a club or two (to make friends and start forming a network), and start looking into an undergraduate research position. This honor’s page describes how to go about finding a position. Notice that you don’t have to be in the honor’s program to follow these instructions.

Good Luck and Welcome to the Gator Nation! :-bd

CALS actually has the only upper division honors program at UF Here is some information <a href=“CALS Honors Scholars - College of Agricultural and Life Sciences - University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences - UF/IFAS”>http://cals.ufl.edu/students/honors-program.php</a></p>

Thank you both so much for this helpful information! As I mentioned, I’m really just focused on building a strong resume for dental school as well as personally challenging myself, but I’m sure I will find plenty of great ways to be involved on campus! I looked everywhere for a link like this, Melissa. Thanks! I could only find CALS honors for freshmen.
