Transport to and from Campus

Hello everyone,
I am a “potential” VT Class of 2024 student (heavily considering attending here over my in state school), and one of the biggest questions I have is the availability of transport to and from VT. I’m originally from New Jersey, driving to Virginia Tech is around a 7.5-8 hour drive one way. I was wondering if I could have any additional advice on additional transport options (was looking into the Smartway Bus, if any of you know what that is), since I would want to know how to get home during breaks, or just when I would want to visit family. Thank you!

Going to NJ your there is Amtrak (station in Roanoke about 35 minutes from Campus and has shuttle bus to campus) or flying (same going to Roanoke)

Also College Transit bus to NJ http://www.collegetransit.com/VT-s/108.htm

and some boards to arrange ride sharing.

The SmartWay bus is one that runs several times a day between the New River Valley and Roanoke. It will take you right to the airport. Also, there are many students from NJ and beyond, so finding a ride home might not be that difficult.

airport will be a little more tedious because the nearest airport that offers direct flights to Roanoke is Philadelphia or LaGuardia (hour drive away from where I live). I will definitely look into the carpooling options with students from NoVa or NJ so thank you!

Hey, I couldn’t find any information about the shuttle bus that would take me to VT? Is there a specific link or is it something that you just take when you get to the station? College Transit looked kinda expensive last I checked (almost $300). Do you have any info on some of the communities for ridesharing?

Amtrak and Greyhound also look to have service. Suggest searching on Facebook for rideshares. Tech (and JMU) are very popular destinations for NJ students, so you should have pretty good odds of finding a ride.

There’s another bus service I believe that takes you to NoVA. One cautionary note - the bus ride is close to 2.5x as long as driving by car due to all the stops between VT and Fair Oaks Mall in NoVa.
