Transportation and Vacation days. PLEASE HELP if you attend McGill and are fromthe US

I have recently been accepted to McGill for science and while I am overjoyed I am also quite concerned about the transition from New Jersey life to Montreal life. My boyfriend will be attending school in Maine. Is it easy to, 1. travel there or to Boston or to NYC? 2. Deal with the fact that vacation days are extremely different for american and canadian students? I feel like I'll never see him or my little sister.

Travel to NYC is relatively easy: plane in an hour with easy ground transportation from McGill to the airport; daily slow train that takes rather too long but is scenic (leaves around 9 am from the downtown train station in Monreal that is about a 7-minute walk from McGill and gets in to the Port Authority in NYC in the early evening); there are cheap buses that run fairly often, especially over the holidays and they are faster than the train.

While Boston is closer, there is no direct train route. Flights are often enough and very quick.

Maine is a pain to get to from Montreal using public transportation.
