Thanks Sybbie, my assistant spoke to the career office. US Air pulling out of Lebanon is a big problem for Dartmouth faculty too. I guess some of those wealthy alum need to donate some of the many private planes that are on the market for low, low prices in this economy! Air Dartmouth has a nice ring!

Sybbie - thanks for the contact info!
Cotee -you noted exactly what the problem is - fewer students fly in/out of Boston, yet Dartmouth Coach runs a bus almost every hour there. More students fly in/out of Manchester yet Greyhound only runs a couple buses a day to that airport. This is a recent change. Vermont Transit used to run that bus line but was bought out by Greyhound which changed the schedule. The old Vermont Transit schedule I do not think was a problem.
And I really do believe that if Williams College, faced with similar circumstances and a smaller student body, can come up with a solution, Dartmouth can too. I really don't think it is unrealistic for the college to take some responsibility for this. Obviously there are plenty of colleges out there, both in remote locations and not, that feel the same way. I am willing to pursue this, but it will take more than one voice to get anywhere.

Longroad, do you have a strategy here? Should we start by forwarding this thread?

hmon5 - hmmm that would be a start. I was thinking we need to collect more information from the students about their recent travel experiences - what airports they used, buses being full, missed flights, alternate arrangements they made, etc. Some have been mentioned in this thread, but it's a small sampling. I know my D said there were a bunch of students who couldn't get on the bus from Manchester last Saturday. So I'm going to ask her for an estimate of the number and to poll her floor and friends for their experiences. Then I was going to call Greyhound and get their exact schedule which is not available on-line and find the old Vermont Transit schedule. It might make sense to also include info on what the other colleges are doing too. But no, I don't have a strategy yet, just ideas.
