Transportation from RH to NYC?

I’m interested in Fordham and initially wanted to attend LC because it was in the middle of Manhattan. However, upon further research, I found out RH provides a better traditional college experience, so I will be applying there. But I still want to be in NYC/Manhattan (not necessarily living-wise, but I’d like to go there whenever I want). Is there transportation from Rose Hill to NYC? Any buses, trains, etc? I will most likely not have a car until maybe mid-sophomore year, so driving isn’t an option.

Thanks!

Rose HIll students to into Manhattan all the time. It is a great part about Fordham. Depending where you are going and what you are doing you can take the subway pretty much anywhere, Metro North to Grand Central, or the Ram Van (Fordham run van service) to the Lincoln Center campus.

I don’t know of any residential student at RH with a car on campus. First it is expensive. Second it is easier to take mass transit into Manhattan (and you don’t have to worry about parking etc.).

My son is entering his third year at Fordham. He is in Manhattan a lot and finds it very easy to navigate. As spirit says, Ram Van, Metro North, Subway are all great options. He has not had a car and would not, very expensive, he will try having a zipcar membership this year (living off campus, for runs the go shopping etc) but a car really isnt necessary

As @junkyarddog says, a car isn’t necessary and would be an added expense. You will get used to taking public transportation to get everywhere. I don’t know if you are from the NY area, but driving in the city is much, MUCH different than driving anywhere. I’m a native NY’er, and let me tell you, driving in the Bronx/Manhattan takes a different mindset than driving anywhere else. I’m used to the area and I know where I’m going since I used to live in the Bronx (my first time ever driving to Fordham was move in day----only knew how to get there by bus. Had no clue how to drive there) and know where the entrances are for the Deegan and Bronx River Parkway, so that’s no problem. Fordham Road is a busy shopping area and also one huge traffic nightmare during certain times of the day. Taking mass transit is no big deal. You will get to where you’re going a lot faster than sitting in traffic or dodging double parked cars/livery cars/buses/pedestrians jay-walking. Buy a MetroCard and/or ten-trip for MetroNorth. It will work out for you better in the long run.

Just to clarify how easy it is – The Metro North to Grand Central Station is --what – 20 yards from the lower Fordham gate. There is a bus that can get you to Manhattan, with the stop also on Fordham Road. The subway is 4 blocks away. The Ram Van runs between Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.

Ack! Wouldn’t think of having a car, since you don’t have to. Driving in the Bronx is HORRIBLE, especially going between the Bronx to central Manhattan. Save your coronaries and take the Metro North!
