Trasferring from Tufts

Hello everyone.
I am a freshman at Tufts, and have been very frustrated with my experience here so far. I've had trouble dealing with minor issues with the administration, and have found that while the student body was advertised as quirky and interested in learning, the reality I encountered in my classes was quite different. On multiple occasions I was mocked for my ideas in class by other classmates and had a paper rejected by a professor for being "too intellectual." While I have hopes that my experience here will improve over the coming semester, I can't bear the thought of staying here for sophmore year if it doesn't improve!

I suppose I'm looking for advice on transferring to another university not for a concrete reason such as my university not offering a major, but transferring to another university from a highly regarded one in order to find the right intellectual and personal fit... It seems like this is a harder case to make in transfer admissions!

I am currently very drawn to Brown and Amherst because of the open curriculum. In my opinion, having classes filled with students that chose to take them out of personal interest instead of requirements seems like the BEST thing that could be done to have a fulfilling academic experience, though I'm not set on open curriculum!

I attended sixth form (last two years of high school) on full scholarship in the UK, though I am American, and had pretty extensive extracurriculars (12 hours community service per week, student council, head of MUN, etc). I received a 40 out of 45 on my IB diploma, had a 2110 on the SAT (780 critical reading, 710 writing, 620 (ouch!) on math) and two 750's on subject tests (english and U.S. History)
At Tufts I am in an elected position in a student club, and participate in a music ensemble and planning with two other clubs. My GPA for the first semester was a 3.93 out of 4.00.

I suppose I'm just looking for advice on the transfer process and justifying moving from a prestigious school, as well as looking for any affirmation that Brown, Amherst, or other universities are within reach as a transfer?

Hey there, I’m a Freshman at Johns Hopkins and am currently going through a similar situation as you are. As far as chances goes, I think you’re definitely qualified. Just as a comparison, my friend transferred out of GW, had similar sat scores, similar ex. curr., had a 3.71 college gpa, and got into Brown and Columbia. So just by stats, I’d say they are definitely in reach.
I’m planning on applying to Brown and some Liberal Arts Colleges like Amherst. Idk what Tufts is like with core curriculum, but at Johns Hopkins, the requirements are pretty flexible. One problem I’ve noticed though is that because of the flexibility, you see a lot of kids that aren’t well-rounded, that already know what they want to do and don’t really explore other fields. At jhu, they try to use requirements and non-major classes to boost their gpa. Just something to consider, I’m sure Brown is very different from Hopkins in that sense though.
I don’t really have concrete reasons to transfer either. I want more personal professors, a more personal education, and be around other students who collaborate with each other rather than constantly compare their achievements.
Out of curiosity, what other schools are you thinking about applying to? have you considered Williams? My gf goes there and I know a lot about what it’s like there.
Anyways, as far as advice goes, something that’s been really helpful to me is just asking friends and friends of friends what their experiences are like at other schools. I’d say first make a list of all the schools you’re considering, make a pro/cons list and slowly narrow that list into a handful of schools.

Thanks for the reply! I suppose my biggest worry about Brown (which I realize is a longshot anyways!) is that I am not extremely wealthy, and would require at least 15,000 in aid a year to attend, and they aren’t need blind. Does anyone know how much of a factor this could be in admissions there, or anywhere I would be applying to transfer? Advice?

I am not sure if you have seen this forum post, but it mentions about Brown specifically and shifts in admission chances due to fa
