Travel Tips (via car)

Here's our advice for the Logan to Hanover run and back. Please add your own tips for this and any other routes.

Logan to Dartmouth. Ignore rental car company advice to get to Interstate 93 North by taking the Ted Williams Tunnel. Go back through the terminal area and take the first airport exit (on the left) to route 1A (South, confusingly) and a left turn into the Summer Tunnel ($3.50 in 2010) for a straight shot to Interstate 93 North. Get in the left lane(s) and stay there, since it’s a while before there are any exits to the left and the signs give you plenty of warning. It’s about 70 miles to Concord, where you pick up Interstate 89 North (via a right side cloverleaf) and then about 55 miles to Exit 18 for Route 120 into Hanover. (There’s a $1 toll about 10 miles after you cross into New Hampshire) Keep to the right at the fork by the Mobil gas station, turn left at the next light on East Wheelock, and you're in the center of town. (There are other routes into Hanover from 89; we like this one, which goes straight past the Marriott Courtyard.)

Dartmouth to Logan. Entrance onto Interstate 89 South from Route 120 is a left hand turn. Junction with Interstate 93 South comes right after Exit 1 and you have to be in the right hand lane. The $1 toll on the way back comes about 10 miles later, and it’s best to move over to the right at that point, since Interstate 93 South (all but the two left lanes) veers off to the right shortly after the toll booths. Can refill gas at Exit 38 or 36 about 20 to 25 miles outside Boston. (Exit 38 has an easier turn back to the road out of the gas station.) It’s safe to take the carpool lane, but you have to get over to the right pretty quickly when the barrier disappears. Far right hand lane over the bridge is joined by a lane on its right that becomes Exit 24A (Government Center) only, but you can get into it and move one lane to the left for Exit 24B (Logan Airport) as you get off or just stay in the second lane from the right. Rental car return lanes are generally to the right until the very last light (after a looping right hand curve), which you go straight through.

Try to avoid Boston in the morning. The traffic is a disaster, and Boston drivers are crazy.
