Traveling to WP this summer

There has been some outstanding resources shared on the Class of 2012 thread pertaining to travel, i.e., flying into Newburgh, renting cars through priceline, etc. If you come across any awesome deals on flights, hotels, or anything, please share. I know there are so many variables and all our situations are unique, but someone may pick up some valuable information that can help in their travel planning.

Question: Has anyone used priceline for a hotel in Newburgh? How far is Newburgh from West Point?

Will hotels in close proximity to WP be sold out for R-day? I haven't started looking yet, but guess I better get started.

I originally posted some of this under the Class of 2012 thread, but agree that this should be under it's own thread for easy access.

When booking flights into Newburgh and renting cars, I suggest using Priceline. There are only the 4 major rental car agencies there, and I got a much lower price when I bid. (Start low! lol) I didn't care which agency I rented from; I was looking for price. Also, chose the economy model, they usually don't have that model and you could get a free upgrade automatically. You just can't be choosy.

I live in FL and have found JetBlue to be reasonably priced and flies into Newburgh. They often run specials, too. I flew up and back for PPW in Oct. for $69 each way (booking 2 months before).

Suggestion: If you use Priceline for hotels - choose 3 star or better. And watch location, you could end up in Manhattan.

Don't count on getting much of a bargain in the surrounding WP area during WP events. (That old law of supply and demand.) The hotels know they can have full occupancy at the regular (or higher) rates.

Check the surrounding areas for hotels, not just Newburgh. Yes, the hotels close to West Point/Highland Falls are booked way in advance. Truthfully, any will do just fine, just depends on how far you want to drive the morning of R-Day. Try looking for hotels in any of the "kills" in the area, Peekskill, Fishkill, etc. I remember there being several nice hotels in Fishkill along with restaurants. Or head south and stay closer to Palisades Mall area, in West Nyack, that's not too far away either.

Another parent recommended the area around Middletown last year when I was looking.

We visited WP 2 weeks ago and stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott in Newburgh for $134 per night which included a AAA discount. The drive was roughly 20-25 minutes to Thayer gate. I noticed there was a Hilton Garden Inn and also a Days Inn in that vicinity. The hotel was fine.

I've read that several of you are booked or in the past have stayed at the Econolodge. I'm booked in June for Econolodge Highland Falls, but the Econolodge site says there is also a Econolodge West Point. I assumed these were one in the same, but no? How far is the highland falls one from WP?

The EconoLodge Highland Falls is about 5 minutes from West Point's Thayer Gate. I do not know of another EconoLodge in the area, so I think it's the same one.

It is the Highland Falls one, which is actually closer than the one called West Point. I know, makes no sense.

After doing some research, there are two. One is in Highland Falls, 5 minutes from West Point. The other is in New Windsor - approx. 3 miles from Stewart/Newburgh Airport and 10 miles from USMA.

I'll be staying at the Highland Falls location. Anyone else?

We currently have reservations there for R day, A day, and the Oct PPW, which is no more...! I tried to book for March, but it's too far away.

Woo hoo! It will be nice for the boys to meet so they have some familiar faces on R day. Those of you who are going, do you have plans for the 29th, like a "last supper?" lol

I've heard there is a picnic given by the town of Highland Falls on that day...also, the varsity athletes have team picnics.

The church across the street from the Visitors' Center has a picnic on Sunday afternoon.

There's a restaurant thread somewhere in the WP archives. There are some really good places to eat - especially once you get out of Highland Falls.

Here is one thread with a list of restaurants:
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/military-academy-west-point/381530-restaurants-west-point-area.html?highlight=Restaurants%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/military-academy-west-point/381530-restaurants-west-point-area.html?highlight=Restaurants</a></p>

Hey thanks for the link. I'll print out all the choices and let my son choose where he wants to eat.

Momoftwins - I have twins too! 15 y/o identical boys. They are crossing out days on the calendar until their big brother leaves! lol Nothing like brotherly love!!

Is anyone staying at the WestPoint Inn?? They said it was 1/2 mile from WP!

Does anyone have opinions on whether to fly to Laguardia or Newburgh?? Im finding it is costing approx $100 more per person to fly into Newburgh! And then a rental car ya da ya da !!! Heck I should split a rental car w/ one of y'all!!!

Newburgh is MUCH easier to navigate, both in the airport and afterwards. Baggage claim, the rental cars, everything is right there and SO easy -- you can be out of the airport very quickly after landing. The trip to WP is less than 30 minutes with no/minimal traffic. Laguardia is another matter. Not sure if it is worth $100 per person, but it might be... especially if you are returning to the airport alone and trying to figure out how to get there.

White Plains is another airport option. It's a very small airport and easy if you don't want to or can't walk very far like the NYC airports. Newburgh is my favorite, but usually several hundred dollars more. Newark and LaGuardia end up being about the same drive time, 1.5 - 2 hours.

For people from the flat part of the country, be prepared for driving in the hills. It's unnatural for anyone from Chicago. ;)

is anyone else planning on arriving a couple days early? i am kinda concerned with the time zone shift, i was dead tired for my candidate visit. i Live north of seattle, only three hours diff from NY, but it was killer, and i want to be 100% when this thing kicks off. Any others considering doing this? ill be staying a week ahead with my aunt in Boston
