Triple qualified

<p>I just heard from my BGO and they cleared all of my medical stuff, put me before a board, and now I am triple qualified!!!</p>

<p>Woot! Way to go. An asthma success story.</p>

<p>Congrats Scit, would you mind sharing your stats?</p>

<p>Scitsailor:</p>

<p>I thought that triple qualified meant a candidate was qualified scholastically, medically, and had a nomination? I thought the physical part (PAE test) was part of being a "whole" person scholastically?</p>

<p>Scitsailor:
Unless the rules have changed, "triple qualified" means medically, scholastically, and have received a nomination. Congratulations on having passed the medical hurdle. The PAE is part of the scholastic "whole person" qualification. Did you already receive a nomination?
Candidatemom</p>

<p>tripled qualified = medically, physically, scholastically, next step is to get a nomination. In other words, being triple Q'ed has nothing to do with with nomintions.</p>

<p>Yes, I took the PAE at summer seminar and passed with flying colors. I had some problems with the DoDMERB (asthma waiver was needed, even though I don't have asthma, thats probably why they waived it- i'm going in for a methacholine test next monday just in case they change their minds). I got an email from my BGO yesterday telling me that i'm triple Qed- PAE, scholastically, and medically. I forget who wanted my stats, but they are as follows:</p>

<p>-4 years at a Naval Honors boarding school in MA, graduating with a Naval Honors certificate (to go on my permanent service record- you have to take a certain number of classes in the naval science department to earn one)
-certified lifeguard and WSI
-certified coast guard lifeboatmen
-3.3 GPA (my school uses a grade distribution chart b/c we don't succumb to grade inflation, so they don't do class rank, and strive to make the average grade a 75 out of 100, so you can't really determine anything from the GPA)
-660V 640M 670Writing, 670 literature SATs
-varsity cross country and track
-deckhand aboard 92' school training vessel, plus sailing capris and a whaleboat
-competive 420 sailor
-girls crew coxswain and rower (i'm kind of short so rowing didn't work out, and i've talked to the coach at Navy about coxing)
-Varsity Debate team 4 years, 10th in league freshman year, 9th in league junior year
-study abroad in Ireland
-Outward bound sailing leadership course (w/ a leadership scholarship)
-class secretary 9th grade, secretary of student council 10th and 11th grade
-editor in chief school newspaper 12th grade
-peer counsellor
-library proctor
-school citizenship award
-National Honor Roll Spring 2003
-Summer Seminar week 2
-Coast Guard academy AIM program (basically summer seminar)</p>

<p>I've applied for nominations from one senator, and the congressman. B/c my school is a Naval Honors school I can recieve a direct nomination from the school as well, and compete against other students with a Naval Honors nomination.</p>

<p>Hope this answers questions?
Meg</p>

<p>Scit, Congrats!!! Are you going to CVW? If so, when?</p>

<p>I got a weird letter today in the mail. Here's what it says:</p>

<p>"The Admissions Board has reviewed your record and has determined you are qualified to compete for an appointment to the US Naval Academy Class of 2009. This completes an important major step in obtaining an appointment to the US Naval Academy, but by no means guarantees you admission. You will be notified of your selection status no later than April 15, 2005..."</p>

<p>What does this mean? Do I now have no chance of getting an LOA?</p>

<p>Marines4me, I'm not sure, but my guess would be no. I don't think they'd send the letter if they were contemplating issuing you an LOA, but what do I know? The good news is that it appears they have found you triple q'd!!!</p>

<p>Marines4me: Don't know if your letter impacts your chances for LOA one way or another. However, take notice of the stats from the class of 2008. Just over 75% of those candidates that were fully qualified received offers from USNA. So the odds are definately in your favor. Good luck.</p>

<p>OK, that makes me feel a little bit better. The only thing is, I have an offer right now from Air Force to play Division I soccer. From what the coach tells me, all I have to do is say the word, and they'll hook me up. I can't wait until April 15....</p>

<p>Not to throw a damper in...but it's 75% of the NOMINEES who are triple qualified that get an offer. So you still need to get that nomination.</p>

<p>But sounds like you're a great candidate.</p>

<p>I got that same exact letter last year and it was about 1 week before I got my appointment, though I applied from college, so this was not until Mar. I would guess that the admissions board is only waiting on a nomination, though, if that is not the case, you will not hear until Feb.-Mar. when a lot of the triple qualified candidates compete for appointments. Make sure to bring the letter to your interview with your Congressmen. Depending on when your Congressmen sends the nominees list to the Academy will depend on how early you hear if you are extremely qualified, since that is all they might be waiting for.</p>

<p>Good luck.</p>

<p>If I already have a nomination, and they have found me triple q'ed- is the next step waiting for an appointment? Or do they not give out full appointments until later on in the winter? I think my BGO is on an extended fishing trip or something...</p>

<p>Scitsailor:
If you already have a nomination, and have received a letter indicating that you are qualified to compete for an appointment, then you are in the final pool from which the appointments are made. In looking at the profile from last year (class of 08) I think that you will find that about 2000 candidates were fully qualified including having a nomination. From this final pool, 1230 were selected for appointment to the class of 2008. Your letter is a positive sign, but not a guarantee of appointment. You have one last hurdle to cross. The timing of appointments depends on many factors, including when the nomination is received by the Academy. The last date for nominations to be received is January 30. My son heard first from his nominating senator that he had received his appointment, then from the Academy. The BGO knew but couldn't relate the information. (Academy policy, I think) Also, some candidates decline their appointments for various reasons, (cold feet, appointment to more than one service academy, etc) thus creating an opening for another fully qualified candidate later in the cycle. I know of a candidate (current plebe) who received an appointment in late June.
Good Luck.
Candidatemom (now plebemom)</p>

<p>"My son heard first from his nominating senator that he had received his appointment, then from the Academy. The BGO knew but couldn't relate the information."</p>

<p>I think you're right about Academy policy. After I received my LOA, I spoke with my BGO and asked if he knew if I would definitely receive a nomination, or if there was a chance I would not. He replied by saying the Academy wanted me and things will progress as they should. That wasn't the answer I was looking for, but I guess they can't talk about certain things regarding nominations. Oh well, <em>sigh</em></p>

<p>I heard from my BGO that my packet is in the hands of the board. Waiting....Waiting.....</p>

<p>I sent off a large supplemental packet with lots of extra letters, etc. in it. I have also re-taken the SAT's and will re-take them again in November. </p>

<p>Best of luck, everyone!</p>

<p>Doug</p>

<p>You sent in extra letters? Has anyone else? Is this allowed??</p>

<p>Scitsailor - </p>

<p>My understanding is that you're encouraged to keep adding to your file throughout the fall. New leadership positions. Improved SAT's. Awards. All these continue to crank up your whole candidate score, which is a useful thing if you're competing with someone else in the nomination category you're in.</p>

<p>Extra letters? Eh, not so much. Unless the info is substantively different or better.</p>
