Hi everyone! Girl from the Washington, DC area. Applying to School of Theatre (BA, my parents insist on a double major), and hopefully theatre (MT minor)/psych major. Also applying to UVA, NYU Tisch, Barnard, Columbia, Stony Brook, Northwestern, Carleton, St. Olaf, and Pomona. Weird group of schools, I know. :)

Eiffel, I just saw It’s Complicated with my future husband (he just doesn’t know it yet) Hunter Parrish. It was great! It was so funny, I really enjoyed it. Plus Santa Barbara is just beautiful… And I am SO excited for Chuck to come back. I’m also hooked on Glee, Gossip Girl, and White Collar. And The Soup. What about you?

That’s a pretty cool group of schools! Do you have a first choice?

My favorite TV shows: a lot of anime! (Ouran High School Host Club, School Rumble, Azumanga Daioh, Fruits Basket, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya), Frasier, Gilmore Girls, Arthur, Brothers and Sisters, Dawson’s Creek…:P

Movies: Disney’s Robin Hood, High School Musical Trilogy, Fox and the Hound, Jane Austen Book Club, Great Mouse Detective, Evening, Ponyo, Wall-E…

NYU Tisch is my first choice, I love acting so much and it’s such a great school. But all of my schools are really great, that’s what I love about them and why I couldn’t get rid of very many! Though I will say I figured out pretty quickly that UCLA is not the school for me.

But USC is one of three of them were I’m applying specifically to the theatre program, so we’ll see how that turns out!

Out of curiosity, what made you feel UCLA was not for you? I originally thought that too, but the more I looked into it, the higher it ranked on my list.

Those are are great list of schools, I’m sure you will have a lot of good options to choose from. I actually only applied to one Ivy, and that’s UPenn. I want to study business and UPenn is the only Ivy with an undergrad business program, plus it’s ranked as the top in the country. I would have liked to applied to more, but I got extremely tired of writing essays and decided it would be stupid to apply to other schools that I probably wouldn’t even end up choosing. I am also waiting to hear from Duke and NYU Stern.

Lightja,

Yeah it’s the opposite for me, my parents saved for my tuition when I was really young so my tuition is covered at any in-state public school. So I only have to pay for room & board, etc and I already got a scholarship from U of M so it would be really affordable. I actually didn’t know much about USC’s financial aid but if it’s good maybe I will be able to consider USC if I am accepted. Your 33 on the ACT is great and if you have good grades then you probably don’t have much to worry about! I also got a 35 on Math and a 760 on SAT Math which is good because I think Marshall also likes to see a high math score.

Well I visited the campus and it just didn’t click with me. It’s a great school, but I don’t think I’d be happy there. I didn’t actually have a formal visit, but a current student that I kind of know showed me around and gave her perspective. It’s just waaaaay too big of a school for me… which is ironic, I know, cause I’m applying to NYU, but Tisch seems way more insulated, you know? UCLA just seemed too impersonal.

Yeah, I can see what you mean about that. It’s one of the things I like better about USC: the more personalized attention. However, I think if you’re social and join student orgs at UCLA (which has the most student orgs of any college), you’d probably find your niche, so I’m not overly-concerned about it. But what you said about NYU is what particularly caught my attention, since NYU is considered the most impersonal school in the country! But you say Tisch seems more insulated?

Movies: Really any Judd Apatow movie! Knocked Up is one of my favorites.

TV: The Office is my favorite show period. But I also am addicted to American Idol when it’s on (yeah, I said it)… and I love Food Network.

@wisdomsomehow, UCLA is only one of my top schools because it’s close to home. But otherwise, I know what you mean. It’s just too big. I’d much prefer to go to a private school. The daughter of one of my mom’s friends is a freshman there, and she’s taking a biology class with 800 students. It’s ridiculous. The UCs are great schools but… I just need a smaller class size or I’m going to drown.

Hey, don’t be ashamed of American Idol! I love it when it’s on too. I’m excited that it’ll be starting really soon too! XD Did you have a favorite contestant last year?

marmar16, we have pretty much the same taste! Just replace Food Network with Friends. My favorites on American Idol last year were Matt, Danny and Alison… so yeah I got pretty bored near the end haha

Mine were similar. Well, I really liked Adam when he was on the show, but after the show ended, he starting getting kind of strange, IMO. I still think he was the best singer and performer from last season, though, and wayyyy more deserving of the win than Kris (who was one of my least favorites). I really liked Allison and Matt too, though!

Yeah Adam was definitely very talented, but not my cup of tea. I agree about Kris though, I remember being surprised when he even made the top 12 (or I guess it was 13). I am very excited for this season!

Haha, yeah, I was surprised when he made the top 13 and then way more surprised when he won. lol. And yay, the new season starts in about two weeks!

I’m pretty sure I know Danny’s brother, or some kind of relation, oddly enough… Gokey’s not exactly a common name, especially not in Wisconsin. I like Kris’ single more than I thought I would.

Yeah, I don’t know, Tisch seems kind of insulated because of the nature of the studio program (for theatre). You’re assigned to a studio, and you work with the kids and faculty in your studio a lot. So it’s like a conservatory within a huge university, you know? But you’re not completely isolated, you have all of New York at your fingertips.

ugh I have no idea what I’ll do when it comes time to make my decision… if I get in anywhere! haha But today I’m feeling pretty confident, so that’s good. The thing that sucks though is that I’ll have just left the country for two weeks April 1st, so it’s like, what do I do? Some I can check online, but for the rest… do I wait the week and a half, or have my mom open the letters? Gah so so so nervewracking! But I guess I hear back from USC pretty early, so I’ll know about 3 schools for sure before I leave–USC, Stony Brook (I applied “priority”), and St. Olaf.

I love reading the threads here and watching the topics switch, like from USC hopefuls to American Idol! It makes me believe that I’ve found my kind. Haha!

Anyway, I’m applying as a transfer - first-choice major Film & TV Prod, second-choice Critical Studies. I’m in the last stretch and can’t wait to send everything out soon!

But it’s kinda nerve-wrecking cause I don’t know any other transfer applying to SCA, and I’m still confused about the way it works. Is it possible to get rejected from SCA but not USC if you’re a transfer?

@Wisdom, it’s great that you’ll at least know about USC’s decision before you go! Especially if you were accepted. That would be amazing knowledge to accompany you on your vacation. So, you said Tisch was your first choice? Or is it tied with USC as first?

@Madeforusc, nice username! XD I haven’t spoken to anyone applying as a transfer to SCA either. You might want to make a separate thread about it.

Tisch is my first choice, but it’s pretty much a 7-way tie for second… Stony Brook’s not one of my first choices, and I don’t know if I want to go to the same school as 15 other people from my class (UVA)… But after Tisch (where I probably won’t get in, they literally have thousands applying for a few spots), I really have no idea where I’ll go. It also depends on who lets me in. :)

I was a bit upset with Adam for dissing Broadway. He said he just did professional theatre (he was in the LA cast of Wicked, Fiyero u/s if you didn’t know) to pay the bills or something, and I’m like, do you know how bad some people want that job? But I apparently saw him on the national tour of my favorite musical. It’s kind of a funny story, actually… I was waiting in the rush line to buy tickets at the Kennedy Center with my friend, and I see this guy in the gift shop who looks kinda like Adam Lambert, so I tell my friend, and say I think he’s an imposter, and then talk about that quote and I think I may have mentioned how I didn’t like his performance of Mad World. And, of course, I find out later, it is the real Adam Lambert, and I was saying all of this in not-very-hushed tones (ie my normal speaking voice) maybe 30 feet away from him? Oops! And then I saw him a tad later, too, in the cafeteria, and I thought to myself, man, he does look like Adam Lambert… little did I know, huh? :)

Haha, that’s a good story! Also, that’s a strange quote…I thought he really liked doing MT? Weird! He has said a lot of weird things lately. Such as, “I’m not bi; I’m gay! But I do like making out with girls…” Uh…Okay…I guess it depends on how you define sexuality, but still a bit odd.

My addiction to the show is a tad ridiculous. I loved Danny Gokey and ANOOOOOP. And Matt too! I know that Adam Lambert is really talented but, like a lot of people say he just wasn’t my thing. I liked Kris near the end but never would have expected him to win, honestly I didn’t pay attention to him that much.

@SamIAm, does that mean you like The Office? I could talk for days about that show. I have almost all the box sets.
