New topic time? Are you guys doing anything special for New Year’s Eve/New Year’s?

Hi guys! I’ve seen a lot of you around here before. :)

I’m a female from the suburbs of Chicago. I applied to USC for Film Production (1st choice) and Critical Studies in Film (2nd choice). USC is my number one choice, so I’m basically dying because I know my chances of getting into SCA are so low. I also applied to NYU, Northwestern, UCLA (boo), and Carnegie Mellon. The only school I’ve heard back from is my safety, UWisconsin-Madison (accepted!).

So, are any of guys hoping to be in Thematic Option if you go to USC?

Thematic Option?

you mean Traumatic Option? haha but yeah, I think it wouldn’t be that bad. I might actually enjoy it! :)

here’s the link to what USC has to say about it: [Thematic Option > USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences](http://college.usc.edu/thematic-option/)

Hey guys! I’m currently a freshman BA Acting major minoring in Musical Theatre. Any questions about what it means to be a Trojan, a theatre major, or what to do while you wait, PM me and I’ll be happy to answer!!

@musicalstudent thats so cool that you get a chance to attend usc! when you applied did you do an interview?

Hey Eiffel,

We kinda liked Chapman too. But we’d need that scholarship money…ya know?

Hi, tokdoc! I decided not to apply to Chapman after all. As you know, I’m already in at UC Davis and I’d rather go there than Chapman, and since I have a good shot at USC, UCLA, Stanford, and perhaps even the two Ivies I applied to and Northwestern (okay, maybe not a GOOD shot at those, but at least some shot), I didn’t really see the point in adding Chapman to my list.

EDIT: Although…looking at the TV Production program again, it does sound pretty good. Hmmm…

musicalstudent, what’s the theatre program like? I’m really interested in the BA with the MT certificate. :)

As to the Thematic Option thing…I read “small liberal arts college” and automatically thought “no.”
Haha. Just my luck, though, my stats probably qualify me for a bunch of liberal arts schools in the west, but none of the big out-of-state universities with tons of competition from in-state kids that I want.

Eiffel: Would you feel better if you applied to Chapman so you’d know what their response would be? You know, the whole “no regrets” thing about choosing schools to apply to. Even if it’s not a reach, it’s an option.
But if you’d really rather go to UC Davis and their programs are good enough, then…that works too. :)

hey guys im from wisconsin and i applied to USC i want to major in international business… i am a mexican someone said that mexicans have a better chance to gettting in to colleges cuz there minority is that true? USC is my first choice

"i am a mexican someone said that mexicans have a better chance to gettting in to colleges cuz there minority is that true? "
i dont want to say yes or no, it just depends how you present yourself to usc :)

Ah, I feel like I haven’t visited here in a while.

Eiffel, Thematic Option sounds great but since I weighed myself down so much in high school it’s kind of iffy. But I haven’t really looked into it much. And I understand why you didn’t apply to Chapman. I didn’t for kind of the same reason. If we’ve already got Davis and UCSB as safeties, why bother? I did Pepperdine as my safety private school since it’s actually ranked by US News (but idk if that means anything anyway)…

@Omar10, welcome to the discussion. USC is one of the most selective schools in the country, and its admissions board can select the near-best of the best to attend. URM (under-represented minority) status helps, but it won’t make up for low SAT scores/GPA/unoriginality. It’s no ticket into college. I’m even saying this, and I’m a URM. Even though I know African-American students are high in demand at most universities, I’m still worried. But if you’ve given it your all in HS, you meet the average stats, and you’ve proven that you belong at USC… then you have a good shot.

Eiffel-Yah, I hear ya. We just really liked the look of Chapman. We’re kinda hoping we don’t see you at Davis…we’d love to see you at Stanford, however:)

@marmar16 my freshman year i didnt do so good in school my grades wernt the best so my GPA is kinda bad…but since my sophomore year i have been getting As and a couple Bs ive been on high honors since then…my school doesnt offer alot of AP classes theres like 2 and thats all…im the president of the senior class n the president of student senate/council… ive been in FBLA for 4 years n played sports throughout HS…i also have chaired a bunch of events at school…r u a current USC student?

@Omar,

No, I’m not a current USC student. I applied for Fall 2010, that’s why I said I was worried even though I am a URM like you. I do, however, know what USC is looking for statistically. Have you checked out their Freshman Profile? I will never know what they want outside of that, but generally speaking I do know that numbers are not all they are looking for. Involvement in your school and passion for a certain activity impresses most admission committees.

I don’t often chance people since I don’t even know what my own fate will be. Did you send in your app yet?

But anyway, good luck! USC is an amazing school. Sometimes it seems almost too amazing to be true.

yea i sent my application awhile back end of Nov beg of Dec…how do i apply to like the merits and stuff like that or do they automatically go from ur app?

@omar10

If you submitted your app before Dec 1st, then you automatically get considered for merit scholarships

Wow, I already missed a lot!

“As to the Thematic Option thing…I read “small liberal arts college” and automatically thought “no.””

But why exactly? I mean, you still get all the resources (both academically and socially) of the huge university of USC, but you get the best professors and sense of community with like-minded peers. You get also get films, dinners, speakers, performances, and field trips with the faculty and students; that sounds pretty awesome!

However, it also makes me a little nervous because I prefer lectures to discussion when learning, but it’s been proven that small discussions make most people learn and understand better than large lecture halls, so it’s definitely something to consider. I guess it’s just because I’m a little shy and non-confrontational, but I’ve also heard that you don’t have to speak up in discussion all the time to be in TO. And it’d probably be good for me to learn to speak up more in discussions anyway. Obviously, I’m not 100% sure either way on it but there seem to be a lot of good things about it to consider.

“Eiffel, Thematic Option sounds great but since I weighed myself down so much in high school it’s kind of iffy.”

Yeah, the workload is another consideration. If I was accepted to the Screenwriting major, I’d probably be pretty swamped (it’s one of the most intensive majors at USC), so that might dissuade me from taking on extra work. Though I have heard that the workload isn’t really that bad in TO anyway…Hmmm…

“Would you feel better if you applied to Chapman so you’d know what their response would be? You know, the whole “no regrets” thing about choosing schools to apply to. Even if it’s not a reach, it’s an option.”

Yeah, that’s what I’m kind of thinking. :-/ We’ll see…but if I do apply, I have to make a video for the TV production major and everything, and I also have my Yale interview this week, so…ahhhh…I don’t know.

“Eiffel-Yah, I hear ya. We just really liked the look of Chapman. We’re kinda hoping we don’t see you at Davis…we’d love to see you at Stanford, however”

Aw, yeah, Chapman’s campus was very beautiful. Haha, I wouldn’t mind seeing you guys at Davis! But Stanford would be great as well. :D

So, if you guys go to USC, do you want to live in one of the residential colleges?
